It isn't a great film by any means, but it is interesting for the background it gives on the Spanish Civil War. There is often a rosy glow attached to the Republican movement in cinema and literature, but in this film some of their methods indicate that there wasn't always a lot to choose between them and the Nationalists. It seems the people of Spain were often caught between a rock and a hard place.
And, of course, I always enjoy Dirk Bogarde.
