I didn't go out yesterday because I knew it was going to be a madhouse. I had to work ten hours anyway, so I'm sure by the time I would have gotten to the stores all the deals would have already been snatched up.
I'm going out to get a gift card later on today for my wife's folks. After that I'll be done with all of my shopping except for my wife. I posted yesterday about getting a computer for a needy friend of mine. I'm still not sure if I'm going to do it, but I did find where I'm going to buy if I do. I've decided to go with a refurbished deal. Thanks to who suggested that.

(3,998 posts)We stopped doing the gift thing decades ago...once we became adults. No kids in the family means no shopping! We don't follow the herd when it comes to holidays. Makes our lives so much better and less stressful

(10,418 posts)But we don't spend a whole lot of money on it. I could see it as stressful if you were running up credit cards or taking out loans to finance it.

(115,683 posts)It's the crowds. I hate crowds; they make me tense and crabby and I can hardly wait to get away. That's why on-line shopping is so awesome.

(10,418 posts)that I don't want to wait a long time to get something done. My wife works in retail here in our small town, but she said that the lines to check out at her store on Friday were 45 minutes to an hour. That would make me crazy. I don't have the patience for that.

(3,998 posts)Crowds, people, blah! Consumerist sheeple...

(3,998 posts)I only go out for groceries and order everything else online. I'm not a fan of people. Plus, I live in overcrowded Los Angeles, traffic and people 24/7

(115,683 posts)since there's not much left of my immediate family and we are all old. There's just a baby grand-nephew who's the only child. Otherwise we exchange a few small gifts, have dinner and that's it. I don't go out to shop any more; I do it all on line. You couldn't pay me enough to shop on Black Friday even if I did have significant shopping to do.

(10,418 posts)It's very convenient. I've gotten a few things this year that I had to go out for, though. Gift cards to local shops and restaurants need to be bought at the store, and I also had a purchase for someone at a liquor store.

(14,881 posts)Actually, I *may* get myself a pre-WWII singer sewing machine. We'll see. I want to be able to turn dog and cat food bags into totes.

(51,308 posts)If it works out for you, let me know.
I've got tons of chicken feed bags that would be very pretty totes, but I'm not creative that way.

(14,881 posts)cut off the top 3-4" or so. cut that strip in half. fold each half-strip along the long sides to make neat hems and sew them flat. that gives 2 short handles. Make a hem at the top of the remaining bag. sew the handles on the bag.
that way, I'm out thread and time. if I'm not able to sell them myself, I'll donate them to the shelter to sell.
It will need a sewing machine strong enough to sew through a few layers of plastic bag, though. I don't know if a non-commercial machine will be strong enough. I'm thinking the antique may be. The ad says it sews denim. I think a few layers of denim takes a lot of power.
I wish it was my idea, but some other enterprising Mainer or Masshole came up with it years ago. I haven't seen any around these parts, so maybe I can corner the market now

(28,394 posts)I just need to go to B & N for a couple of baby toys and a book or two for the older one.
If only the adults in the family were that easy!

(3,600 posts)The nieces say they're adults and don't want any kid presents. My sister and wife may have to work on Christmas. My foster son, in the Coast Guard, asked for a bottle of spiced rum. I sent one to him. The cats want snuggles and scratchies for Christmas. They'll get them.
I had to work on Black Friday.

(51,308 posts)Sparkly and Christmasy - she loves bird figurines, and I just couldn't resist them. She loved them.
I only have family to buy for really - and a close friend.
It gets harder to figure out what to buy every year. Especially for an 89 year old mother.

(47,552 posts)...same way I've been doing it since 1975.
I love the noise. I love the "stress" (which I like to call "excitement" . And I love love LOVE being alone in a crowd! (And anyway, Xmas shopping at the mall ain't got shit on a Slayer mosh pit.)

Just have to buy a couple of liquor bottles & some wine for family. I'm looking forward to Christmas this year. I recently got some bad news on my cancer, so I don't know what will be for Christmas 2016. I just want everyone to be happy.

(20,582 posts)I hate shopping with a gazillion people to get around. I look for just the right thing all year and buy it (a lot of it online) when I see it at a good price. That was I don't get stressed out right before and can concentrate on the fun stuff like the parties, visiting and trying out new recipes and my mad cooking skills.
