Overnight, actor Harry Shearer dropped a news bomb: His 26-year run on The Simpsons was over. Fans immediately envisioned The Leftovers-style rapture of the actor's classic characters. But for better or worse, Shearer's departure does not spell the end of his voiceover roster. Esquire spoke to Simpsons showrunner Al Jean, who confirmed that Springfield will solider on intact. "We do not plan to kill off characters like Burns and Flanders but will recast with the finest voice over talent available," he tells Esquire. As to why Shearer bowed out of the show, the writer-producer explains that the actor simply moved on. "Harry Shearer was offered the same deal the rest of the cast accepted, and passed," Jean tells Esquire. "The show will go on and we wish him well. Maggie took it hard."

I saw posted on Facebook that Harry said the contract would not let the actors do other projects. Don't know if that was true.

(20,186 posts)Maybe he just quit because he's 71 and he's been doing it for 26 years. He's done some other things over the years. Hank Azaria has done lots of other projects.

(12,132 posts)is in the past they have always been allowed to do other projects but this time the contract said no.
It doesn't make any sense to me to not allow it so maybe I heard it wrong or the news station got it wrong.

(20,186 posts)The producers have always griped about the production costs. The actors started out getting $30K per episode, but over the 26 years, it has grown to $300K per episode. Nice work if you can get it!
Personally, I think it's time for EVERYONE to move on. 26 years?!

(12,132 posts)and on and on if it's still entertaining me. I wish they had given Futurama 26 years. I'd watch that every day.

(24,146 posts)4. The Late Philip J. Fry, Season 6, Episode 7
The Episode:
Fry continues his trend of being late to meet up with Leela after he and Bender are roped into testing the Professors new time machine, which is designed to propel people one minute into the future. Fry records a video message for Leela, apologizing for being a minute late, but the Professor accidentally goes too far into the future and the message becomes lost. Fry, the Professor, and Bender must continue traveling forward in time until they find a point in which backwards travel is invented. Meanwhile, a hurt Leela goes on with her life
until she eventually finds the birthday message from Fry. She decides to reply
Why Youre Going to Need a Moment:
and so, 1 billion years later, Fry finds that Leela has written him a message using water that has dripped from stalactites. It reads, Our time together was short, but it was the best time of my life.

(2,805 posts)The others could do outside work but they want him as an exclusive.
I also saw rumors that this might just be a publicity stunt to drum up support for the show. But after 26 years, I'd say give it a rest. The Simpsons and South Park were both groundbreaking shows but after a decade the novelty wears off and unless you have a perfectly scripted episode probably not worth watching. NB: I watch a lot of BBC shows that give only 6 episodes a season and never last more than 5 years no matter how popular they are. I've gotten used to the idea of do great work and quit while on top as an adage for great teevee. Put the money into developing new shows that are great for a short time.

(12,132 posts)the current episodes are as good as ever. I'll even give the new guy a chance - I love Harry and I don't see how he can be replaced but I'll listen and see if I can get into it.

(12,723 posts)I am sure he is negotiating for a decent cut of the billions (no hyperbole) the show has made as a retirement fund.
They are fools if they do not make him a decent offer. He is half the show.

(4,482 posts)Keep in mind he makes $300,000 per episode now (along with the other main cast members).

(12,723 posts)Sitcom stars make that much plus fox will sell toys and other stuff from this show for the next half a century.
I take Harry Shearer's talent over that of Charlie Sheen, Jim Parsons, Johhny Galecki, etc. The concept that voice actors are worth less is stupid.

(17,194 posts)Like green screen acting for video games and whatnot, you don't have other actors to play off and the direction is usually for shit. Proves that a pretty face is worth a lot more than talent, IMO.

(18,470 posts)My brother hasn't either, and he was a lot bigger a Simpsons fan than I ever was. I think he just thought the show was showing its age and wasn't as good as it was 10-15 years ago.
