Bitter Moon (1992)
British couple Fiona and Nigel Dobson are sailing to Istanbul en route to India. They encounter a beautiful French woman, and that night Nigel meets her while dancing alone in the ship's bar. Later he meets her crippled American husband Oscar, who tells him their story. While living in Paris for several years trying to be a writer, he becomes obsessed with a woman he met by chance on a bus. He tracks her down and they start a steamy love affair. Soon Oscar finds himself enslaved body and soul by her love, and continues to tell Nigel the details of this relationship in various stages over a number of visits to Oscar's cabin.

(38,613 posts)It was... interesting, anyway. I wasn't bored, but I don't see myself owning it.
She loved RP and we used to argue about him now and then. She took the side of letting him be a free man.

(56,912 posts)That said ... having watched this movie ... I think RP actually .... learned .... something ....
would he have learned it otherwise .... in prison .... ?

(21,925 posts)Polanski for me is one of the world's greatest artists alive today, considering his body of work from the fascinating "Knife In The Water" onward. I don't approve of his personal life but I love his movies for the most part.

(110,159 posts)movies i have seen. cant do whine. ever. even my little ones. geez, or my husband. no whine. so no. i would not watch simply cause i do not like his "art".
and no, i would not watch, cause i am just not entertained by this story of a pathetic old fart after the girl. that story never floated my boat. maybe i should see if the movie you refer to has that theme, i do not know. so many of his movies does.
lastly, ... i cant/dont separate. i cant watch a mel gibson movie without seeing his wild bigoted self anymore and i really liked him. i wont watch a charlie sheen anymore and i really liked him. so no, i do not watch, when their off screen totally turns me off. i see that as part of them and it follows into their character.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)you can not judge the art for seeing the artist behind the art.
would this be an accurate statement of your position?
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)i can probably say, if i took the time to watch, whether it was a good movie or not whether i liked the person or not. but, if i do not like the person, i do not particularly enjoy the movie.
like, i have never liked allens whine. i do not like his personality and it seems to flavor the movie. or.... it is just his characters. (this has nothing to do with his pedophile self). but, once learning his history, i have a conscious decision to boycott, like i have done with other actors/actresses.

(56,912 posts)truth is I did not even realize that RP did Bitter Moon until after I watched it. and that is when I came to the conclusion that he chose to make this film for a personal reason ... but, I could be wrong about that. It made me wonder though ... so, I can see how the art and the artist can also NOT be viewed separately
I checked out Bitter Moon because Hugh Grant was in it. Silly me.

(41,977 posts)A true artistical genius with movies and a pig of a human being. I like Tarentino movies too, and while as far as I know he's not at Polanski level creepy, he's not the worlds nicest guy either.
Edit-haven't seen the movie

(110,159 posts)i wouldnt watch the pianist just cause it is not my type of movie. that is what i am saying, he makes movies that do not interest me anyway, well before i learned about his personal experience. when i learn something i oppose, whether it is merely him or thousands involved, i wont give him my $.

(10,575 posts)When Samantha Geimer was 13, the famous 43-year-old film director Roman Polanski said that he was photographing young American girls for a feature in French Vogue. With forgivable naivety, Geimer's mother allowed him to take her out alone. He photographed her topless, which she did not tell her mother.
A few weeks later, Polanski took Samantha to Jack Nicholson's house, gave her several glasses of champagne and part of a sleeping pill, then had sex with her. It was statutory rape. Geimer says: "It was rape in every sense of the word. I said no."
...
When Roman Polanski, who has lived in exile from America and its justice system for decades, was nominated for an Oscar for directing The Pianist, Samantha Geimer called on the Academy to "judge the movie, not the man".
She has been exchanging emails with Polanski for several years.

(4,138 posts)It's good (and funny, once you get attuned to Polanski's weird sense of humor), but it's not in the same league as "Repulsion."
