I've been offered a new job and I've accepted, so now I need to find a place to live. I know it will be expensive. Most of my pay raise will be spent on housing. I'm moving because my boyfriend lives in Fairfax, VA. Eventually we will live together, likely somewhere in the middle. But for the immediate future, I need to find something within a reasonable commuting distance. Say 30 miles. Probably an apartment.
I'm not familiar enough with the geography to know what towns and cities are good, and what to avoid.
Thanks.

(16,245 posts)I'm never optimistic when it comes to interviews, though, so it came as kind of a shock.
Thanks

(131,292 posts)SECOND, x-post in Maryland AND Virginia.
I'm in MD, in a DC suburb and in southern MD on the Patuxent River, and tho I'm not familiar with the housing situation in and around Annapolis, I'm sure there's plenty to choose from. MD group will be able to advise you about the Annapolis housing market, and what spots to avoid.
edit: Here's a route/map between Fairfax and Annapolis. http://www.distancebetweencities.net/annapolis_md_and_fairfax_va/route

(16,245 posts)I don't think commuting from there is possible, given the traffic.
I'm sure once I have a start date I will go up there to look.

Thinking of living around Annapolis, and visiting Fairfax weekends?

(16,245 posts)Or he'll visit me, more likely. Probably even during the week as well.

(131,292 posts)and GREAT if y'all like to sail. And if you don't KNOW whether you like to sail, you can take lessons!

(16,245 posts)Then again, I've run aground in motorboats as well, so the presence of a motor clearly makes no difference.
Have fun, and eager to welcome you to Maryland!

(131,292 posts)its a large county, my daughter lives there (her husband's a deputy sheriff there,) and HER part of the county is 30 miles from me.
MANY PG residents commute to DC to work. AND some who live in Annapolis also commute to DC to work. We're movers!!!

(13,447 posts)It's just off of Route 50, about halfway between Annapolis and DC. Crofton is a little bit cheaper than Annapolis and it's got a TON of restaurants, shops, a movie theater, golf course, etc. It's also within easy driving distance to Baltimore, which is nice for weekend day trips.

(16,245 posts)Will definitely keep it in mind.

(4,033 posts)For housing would be a good place to look at. Towson is nice but may be a bit further than you want to Annapolis

(16,245 posts)From my initial investigations, it seems a little cheaper, too. At least from the listings I've seen.
