I've had a number of very kind people ask me how my knee is, and how I'm doing...
Well, today I saw my surgeon for my two-week check, and it's official: I'm doing great.
I've shed the knee immobilizers, and the walkers...
No cane either.
I've got good range of motion in the knee, and can now bend it to 110 degrees.
What little pain I have is hardly noticeable and only if it interferes with my sleep do I take any pain med for it.
And the best part? Now I no longer need to cover the knee with Saran Wrap to keep it dry in the shower! It's healed to the point that I can let the water run freely over it.
Every day, I'm a little bit stronger, a little bit more myself...
Thank you, all of you, for standing by me as I pass through this adventure!

(37,540 posts)Keep exercising that knee...if it gets a little sore, that means your making progress!
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,627 posts)Yeah, I have a little soreness, but I just massage it, and keep on going!
Now if I could just get rid of this pesky cold!

(4,833 posts)I live in FL - the land of hip and knee replacements. I know at least a dozen people that have had this done in the last two years or so. Based upon their experience as related to me, it sounds as though your progress is first rate.
Congrats. Whatever you're doing - keep doing it.

(12,272 posts)You are a surgeon's dream. Wonderful that you no longer need the saran wrap, that is such an inefficient system and it never works that well anyway.
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,627 posts)Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be doing this well after only two weeks...
I am amazed!

(34,136 posts)Way to go!
On the other hand, you're a hard act to follow. It's going to be hard to live up to your example of how to recover from knee replacement.
Just kidding - that is so wonderful I can't think of what to say.
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,627 posts)Oh, I hope nobody will be intimidated by my seemingly easy recovery...
I took it as it came, and did the best I could.
I will always encourage everyone to stick with the program and ask for help whenever it's needed.

(36,286 posts)the most annoying feature of this adventure!
I have a theory about surgical recovery - that the itching from the last few stitches to be taken out on a doctor's visit next week tends to be as irritating as the initial sledgehammer of waking up sliced and diced!
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,627 posts)Well, not exactly annoying, lol! I always wondered if it would actually work.........and it mostly did!
Hell, the itch is no problem! I just scratch.....gently! No infections for this knee...
Thanks for your good thoughts!

(24,853 posts)Two weeks and you're doing so well? WOW! 110 degrees is good enough to ride a stationary bike, no?
This gives me the confidence I'll need to have my $.98 knees replaced when the time comes.
DO keep us posted!
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,627 posts)Yes, 110 degrees is perfect for riding a recumbent bike, or so my PT guy told me today. I will be resuming that when I go back to the gym.
I really did not expect to be doing this well so soon. It was only a few days ago when I still felt very tired and sore...
Thanks for your very kind words!
cherokeeprogressive
(24,853 posts)you've been in a long time. Heck, my last ACL reconstruct happened when I was in my 30's, and the PT+biking on weekends was the last best shape I've been in. I used to ride from Whittier to the Seal Beach Pier and back with a Walkman (how funny is that?) on Saturdays.
Get a good (really good) bike if you don't have one already. So much fun!
I'm so glad you're doing well... Keep up the good work!

(2,899 posts)It hasn't been all that long and all ready you are walking!
Four years ago (next week) I had my ankle totally replaced. After the surgery, I couldn't put any weight on it for three months and then it hurt so very bad. I thought it would never be okay. But it's great and I'm so thankful to my surgeon. I could not walk on my old ankle anymore...my insurance turned me down and called the surgery "experimental". My surgeon had to fight for me and we won.
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,627 posts)Wow, good for you, and good for your surgeon! I would have been scared to death in such a case. I can bet it hurt.
And I'm so glad your ankle is great now!
I think I was out of bed the next day, although I really don't remember. I was pretty out of it for a couple of days!
Thanks for your good words and your amazing story!

(15,164 posts)I've had both knee and leg surgery more times than I care to remember and I know the recovery process can either be relatively smooth or painfully tediously hard. It's great to hear that your recovery seems to be following the lines of the relatively smooth way and am very impressed by your rapid progress. Great to hear that everything is going welll
My thoughts, prayers, best wishes and positive vibes for your continued recovery and it's great to have you back on DU

Keep your fingers crossed for my wife. She has tumors of what's left of her thyroid, and gets them (and it) taken out
in 9 days. If they're benign, then it's just a question of adjusting her thyroid medication. If they're malignant, well, it's
"here we go again," and the ugly stuff starts up once more. Let's hope not!

I'm very glad to hear the knee is progressing well and that your mobility is improving.

(46,585 posts)Glad you are recovering without incident. I'm looking at knee replacement in the not too distant future; I understand the incapacitating pain and locking. I've been rather apprehensive, but your posts have assuaged much of that anxiety. Thanks for that. I wish you a continued uneventful recovery!
