It's a great time to be drinking beer in America. Not that it was ever, you know, a BAD time to be doing that necessarily, but with craft breweries multiplying like rabbits who've been drinking beer, you can literally find some serviceable (if not downright tasty) local brews in all 50 states. Which made the process of ranking them all the more difficult, but we were up to the challenge, especially since it meant drinking and thinking about beer for weeks straight.
Here they are, all 50 states in the Union, ranked according to their beer. A couple notes about our criteria. Quantity and quality are both important, but quality's a bit MORE important. If you're a small state turning out a disproportionate amount of great beer, it did not go unrecognized. We also gave a boost to states who played a historical role in American beer as we know it today. We also argued a lot, so if you want to do that as well, please join us in the comments!
Eep so sorry for Mississippi and West Virginia. I thought Delaware would be higher than 19 but then again it really is just one super kick-ass top rated in the entire country brewery that gives us our ranking but we have some other great breweries of note like 16 Mile and Twin Lakes. But Dogfish Head is just so super awesome it overshadows everything else. It's like driving a Porsche. After that your reliable trustworthy Subarus and Toyatas are nice but just not as awesome as the Porsche!

OTOH, I'm shocked they rated Rhode Island that low (#48). It ain't all Naragansett. The craft brewer Coastal Extreme Brewery and their Newport Storm brand has great stuff

Yay for New York (#9) and yay for their mention of Captain Lawrence Brewery, just a few miles from my home:

is higher than I would have expected.
But there are a lot of brew pubs here.
I guess I'm too old to care about all the new beers. I love Newcastle Brown Ale, Stella Artois...an occasional Heineken.
But in my old age, I've turned into a wine drinker. I miss beer though.

I'm not a beer drinker, but my hubby is, and he says it's every bit as good as the Trappist ales in Europe.
