Bring back the days of Johnny, Waylon, Hank, and Cline! Today's country has bad lyrics, fake singing, and all-around awfulness. Country used to have soul. Now it's "hop in my truck you purty thing and hand me a beer while I sing about dirt roads and all things Southern".

(4,138 posts)Sturgill Simpson's album is freaking awesome. If you ever wondered what Waylon would have sounded like if he was a total acidhead, here you go:
Old Crow is still doing their thing (and just won a Grammy). Fun catchy prison sex song:
Dave Rawlings Machine doing a fine Zeppelin cover (with John Paul Jones playing mandolin):
Jason Isobel (pretty much anything associated with Drive-By Truckers is great, although more Southern Rock than Country)
Just discovered the Allen Thompson Band a couple weeks ago. Thoughtful lyrics, good singing and a sort of 70s Cali country-rock vibe:

Country music has gone straight into the toilet.

(512 posts)modern rap sucks too. RUN-D.M.C. and Sugarhill Gang are fucking awesome. Tupac Shakur wasn't half-bad. But, just like country, rap has become a very, very BAD self-parody of itself.

(25,816 posts)I am a blues guy, but I gotta admit, there's a lot of good country songs out there. The "old country" you refer too is well known to me.
In the little town where I moved to in '78, that's all that was on the local radio we listened to as we laid block homes in a row.
Country music changed when they got "hippie" guitar players and the sound got morphed. Hell, we also cover "Folsom Prison",
"Lonesome Fugitive" (Merle) and others. I don't play out much anymore (64), but around here, you had to know some country to play.

(21,046 posts)I like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson because they have good voices and don't whine.
And this new country crap is just the same negative whines with a bit more electric guitar thrown in. Yuck.

(17,111 posts)Kacey Musgraves is great. Miranda Lambert isn't bad and The Pistol Annie's are a hoot.
There are waaaay too many country/pop cute boys with minimal talent. A few, very few, have some real talent but they choose to waste it. Unfortunately, they have taken over the charts.

(3,569 posts)lot of great country out there. Just not being played on the radio.
Strugill Simpson is an amazing "true" country artist. Shooter Jennings (Waylon's kid) is amazing. Lukas Nelson, (who rocks out a lot) is seriously talented. Brokedown in Bakersfield. if you want old school country it now labeled as Americana more than country. It's out there, just not on commercial radio stations.

(12,132 posts)The Promise of the real. He delivers. I like Shooter too. And their daddies.
But yeah, like pretty much every other genre, if it's on commercial radio, it's probably shit.

Not one of them is played on country radio anymore, but they are a damned sight better than that crap.
