The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsRhiannon Giddens, what an amazing singer.
Rhiannon has spent a decade in the world of folk, as singer and performer with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a musical collective devoted to African-American string band music. She is an outstanding vocalist, and banjo and fiddle player.
Here she is performing as part of the band called The New Basement Tapes, which also includes Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith, and Jim James.
Here she is in a simple duet with another singer, that really features her beautiful voice.

(4,138 posts)She's equally at home in traditional Celtic music too (though obviously, there is a lot of overlap between that and the string-band stuff).
Here she is playing her fretless banjo:
She and The Carolina Chocolate Drops are great!
On my wish list is to hear a collaborative album between them and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band some day.

(23,340 posts)It was interesting watching them work. Rhiannon was a little frustrated during part of it but seemed to work out in the end.

(4,138 posts)Between this and Old Crow Medicine Show, even sifting through his outtakes and half-finished songs, it's still possible to strike gold.
