Seriously - why buy something new?
If you want to avoid sweatshop labor, most "vintage clothing" was made in the USA
And you are not demanding from the system, let alone populating the never ending garbage pit...

Or 'step-ins'.
Where you from and how old are you?

(36,487 posts)We got one new pair of drawers each spring, and a couple pair of socks. When the first pair of socks sprung a hole I'd pull them up and baste them to the drawers and start on the next pair of socks. By fall I had a nice pair of long johns to carry me over until spring. We were thrifty, that way.

(422 posts)I love me some Savers. I have one of those "off the rack" bodies, so it's always easy to find stuff that fits. Style wise, I've dressed in "urban prep" for the last 25 years. Today I'm wearing green Polo chinos and a black thick woven Izod shirt. Neither item was over $10. Oh yeah, I'm also sporting a fitted black racing motorcycle jacket by Shift. $12. No kidding.

(18,497 posts)With the inner garment exception mentioned above. And also I don't buy shoes used unless they are very, barely worn. A shoe takes the shape of someone's foot and will never feel right.
Love thrift shops and so does my daughter. Son, not as much, but only because guys don't tend to donate clothes that are still decent. Guys tend to keep clothes until they're rags or they die. Lots of Sansabelts...lol.
But my daughter long ago learned that you can go out with $50. Go to the Mall and get one outfit if you're lucky. You can get bags of clothes for that price at the thrift store.
I also buy occasional shirts here and there like cafepress and this place http://www.northernsun.com/

(82,849 posts)When they were outfitting the characters for the Wizard of Oz, the fellow playing Professor Marvel/The Wizard went to Wardrobe and picked out a loud, tacky jacket. As with a lot of stuff in studio wardrobes in the late 1930s, there was much used and recycled clothing. As Frank Morgan ran the pockets on the jacket, he came across a card that indicated the jacket had once been owned by L. Frank Baum, author of the Oz stories.
Is the story true? I don't know! But I heard it many years ago, and it pleases me to think that it might be true.

(30,947 posts)Since I have not been working for the past 2 years, I have not needed to buy anything new. There is also some clothing that I have had since the '70s, '80s and '90s.

(18,219 posts)I love that they are cheap, and that I am not fueling a consumer frenzy. And when the fashions change to things like ruffles or other styles that are not flattering, I can still find clothes that don't look ridiculous on me.
But what I like best is that I can see how the item holds up to washing and wear. I have been burned by that cute sweater that instantly pills all over or the shirt that loses it's shape with the first washing. Or worst of all, the blouse that needs ironed or is wrinkled within a minute of wearing it.

(20,234 posts)and my husband teases me because I don't just get them at the thrift shop, I wait til they're on sale, 5 items for $5. It's been great while I've been dropping clothing sizes, for $20 I had a decent size 12 wardrobe for work, another $20 covered the size 10 months, etc. I love that!

(13,923 posts)Its very rare that I find anything in a thrift store that would fit me. Its even more rare that I find anything in a thrift store that would fit me that I could wear. Maybe once in the last 8 years rare.

(55,476 posts)You can do a lot of used clothing shopping on the net - and every piece of clothing I bought on the net was perfect.

(13,923 posts)its hard for me to find new clothing, much less used. When I do find things, its generally either thug gear or fat businessman clothing. Nothing that seems to fit in with my Bahama hobo look.
I am curious where you find used clothing on the net. I will admit its been a couple years since I looked for a new supplier of clothing, even though the one I found to be the best is still no better than 50/50 on sizing/quality. Still better than anything Ive found elsewhere.

(8,244 posts)I usually stop at the laundry on the way home.
Wash all of it before bringing it into the house.
Don't want to pick up any creepy crawlies.

But everything I've worn has given me no creepies, nor crawlies
Levi's Jeans, of ANY kind, are cheap. That is, unless they are from the "big E era" when the "E" in Levis was uppercase.
Don't get these, get the cheaper ($10 @) newer and fully wearable used Levis.

(1,485 posts)Nice name-brand stuff.
I get most of my clothes this way. One needs to go to the thrift stores often, though, in order to score.
I do not remember the last article I bought new.

(21,020 posts)a whole bagful of stuff from Goodwill a couple of weeks ago. Got a $5 discount with my stamped card so the whole thing was $10.
The problem with buying second hand most of the time is that many of these places don't have a "plus size" section. Or, if they do, it's very limited.
So I usually end up buying pullovers and shirts in the mens department because I like them very roomy anyway.
Other than that, I'll buy plus sizes from independent sellers on eBay.
Like others, my line stops at undies. Oh, and no shoes because my feet are very very wide and hard to fit. I don't see a lot of people out there wearing Bozo the Clown shoes, which is sort of what mine look like.
Only a little larger.

(1,485 posts)The color will never, ever be the same as that on an article of clothing I want.
My wife and I go regularly. The women's section is SO HUGE compared to the men's(understandably)---but when I score, I feel like I got away with something!
It is rare, though, and the time and energy it takes to get stuff there is most likely not worth it, compared to just shopping.
But I can't help myself.

(32,116 posts)years ago. It was our last year of school and I was pregnant so that's where I bought most of my maternity and baby clothes. Then I resold what I could (and the few new things I had bought). Now I buy more new things for us, but I still resell a lot, and especially when I'm at the thrift store selling my daughter will be there looking through the racks for new treasures. In fact I've been on eBay a lot the past two weeks selling my kids spring/summer clothes ... people buy a little early so now's the time to sell.

(32,116 posts)I had my career in the 90s and finally went back to school in 2000 - and had my kids this past decade. It's ok to be an older mom though, I have a lot of experience to draw from and not much surprises me anymore.

(13,906 posts)Last year I decided to do a thorough clean out of my closet. I was appalled at how much I had and how many duplicates I had. I took lots to Goodwill and the rest went into a closet in the guest bedroom. I kept available only those things I knew I would wear on a daily basis. A few months later I needed an outfit for a special event...normally I would have headed to the store to find one...instead I went into the spare closet and "shopped" there. At another time I needed a pair of slacks to match a jacket I had. Again, I was going to hit a store, again I hit the spare closet and found 2 pairs of slacks that matched perfectly. I think I've learned my lesson.
