The wife thinks I should quit pursuing my career dream

I want to be in technical sales

I have done well in this

But when the economy went south, I was laid off

And have been able to only land SysAdmin type jobs since

I have been in the running for several sales engineering jobs since, and always made it to the last two, but for whatever reason, didn't get the job

Wifey thinks I should abandon this pursuit

I don't

Being an admin makes me want to continue drinking

Notice I said continue

I fell off the dog damn wagon

I deserve my shit

I don't know your situation, but though drinking when you don't want to is a real problem, it doesn't mean you're terrible or weak or anything but trying to find a way to cope. Beating yourself up is just adding to the pain you're trying to assuage. Bad circle.

Now is the time to be kind to yourself. And to let others be good to you. Day by day. Day by day. Sometimes you hold on because you hold on. And it gets better.

If you look good, you feel good.

I don't mean 'look good' like an Arrow shirt model, I mean 'look good' meaning pulled together, dressed like you give a shit about yourself, decent grooming, etc.

If you're giving it a belt, you might not look as good as you could. You sure aren't feeling good about yourself, if you are saying things like "I deserve my shit."

No one's going to hire someone who doesn't think that their shit doesn't stink, especially in sales.

Do a little work on yourself; get your attitude correct and then go for what you want.
