Hail and Farewell

This is Benny. He was 15 years old in the photo. That was 2 years ago. He was attacked by another dog in 2004. I posted about the attack at the time. He had to learn to walk again. He did. We made sure he got better. As hard as it was we decided that it was best for Benny to leave us before he became unable to walk again. He was heading that way and his poor body was getting so weak. I couldn't talk about it at the time. It's still hard. Benny left us on May 9, 2013 and I'll miss him always.

This is Pip. He came to live with us a few days ago. Pip is a Rat terrier/Welsh terrier mix. We weren't planning on getting another pack mate so soon but I saw him and I had to bring him home.

Benny was such a beautiful baby.......your picture of him is wonderful.

You did the right thing, hard though it was.

And Pip is wonderful! These are great portraits...I feel as though he could just jump right out of the pictures into my lap!

What a treasure you have here...

I hope you'll have many, many happy years with him...

Pip has a miniature dachshund (Tui) to play with and they seem to like each other. Tui happily engages in the typical puppy roughhousing with Pip..but carefully.

Benny was our first doggie as a couple. He lived on 2 continents and all over America with us. He knew we were pack even before we did. He taught us what that means. Pack is family.

You are a wonderful and brave person. I know how difficult it is to make that decision, even when your rational mind keeps telling you it's the right thing. It's so difficult to accept what needs to be done. I've been there myself, my Shadow had been with me for 17 years. She was a part of my life and my family, and always will be.

To have made that decision, and have brought hope to another furry family member so quickly leaves me in awe of the capacity of your heart. I respect you for having the courage to do something I couldn't do.

Pip is darling! I've a feeling you're going to be amazing together.

That's exactly how I felt. I knew it was right for Benny but I wasn't ready to let him go. I stayed with him the whole time and kissed him goodbye.

Thank you, again.

I'm glad you had Shadow in your life. They make us better people.

I'm seriously thinking of making the visit to the SPCA soon now. It's been too long, and I have a lot to offer the next furry family member.

Thank you for that.

You made me read this! I avoid posts like this as if they were the plague. I thought you were leaving DU, so I was like, "Oh hell no!" I understand why people post these things, and I am so glad there are DU'ers who are stronger than I am, because I cry every time I read one of these posts, even more when it is someone I like. It's just too taxing. So I am glad there are DU'ers who take up my slack, but since I am here...

I am very sorry for your loss. I can imagine the pain you felt at losing your friend. What a very sweet face he had and how lucky he had someone in his life who loved him like you did! And now, there is a new life, who will share in your love...what a lucky pup!
