Is it worth it to get in facebook arguments about politics?

about politics. Im 29 and I will tell you that in my youth I was a real firecracker when it came to fighting and defending positions online. I lost friends denouncing Bush and later defending Obama. The thing is, all the well reasoned arguments and sited sources never seem to change anything with the other party. They just call you names, say you lie, or make up their own facts. You leave the situation frustrated and angry....it can really ruin your day. Moreover, if it is an argument between friends it can strain that relationship and the relationship between you and others who see it.

My friend just posted a rant on facebook about being mad about the President's response/actions to Libya. I was going tow rite a very well worded rebuttal but decided not to. I thought 'whats the difference' it isnt going to change his views nor the views of others. It will just piss off a friend in front of the world.

Does anyone else feel this way. I work with the local Democratic Party and do my best to support the cause, I just feel that arguing a point online is a huge waste? Have i lost my fire?

I don't think it's worth it.

But then, I'm old enough to have seen that no argument involving religion or politics has ever been "won".

Some people are so deeply invested in their beliefs and opinions that presenting facts to them only makes them dig their heels in all the harder.

So, as far as I can see, arguing things like politics mainly just serves as a kind of sport, or amusement.

I mean, really...how many families get together during holidays and argue the same old shit over and over and over again? Nothing ever changes.

Pointless. Unless one is into the adrenaline rush of arguments.

It's too stressful. I recently re-connected with a friend from high school; he was a pretty decent guy back then. He is a math teacher now in Arizona. And I don't know what's in the air and water down in Arizona, but he's gone over to the dark side, supporting Rmoney.

He posts an anti-Obama status update every once in a while. I thought about challenging them, but I just don't have it in me. I remember him as a fun, decent guy, and now he's one of them. He knows where I stand. I post some pro-Obama things now and then, and he never replies to them. He's probably wondering about me.

If people de-friend you, that's their tough luck; you're better off...

I hardly ever make political comments or comment on someone else's thread if it's about politics.

You're not going to change their mind and they're not going to change yours.
