I bought "The Avengers" today.
Haven't watched it, but I watched the credits.

(63,208 posts)IMO it totally delivered everything that a reasonable viewer could have expected. Smart dialogue, solid acting, terrific pacing, great effects, and enough story to hold it all together. It's not Tea with Mussollini, but I don't think that most viewers were seeking that kind of film.
Given its length, quite well-matched to the scope of the story, if they'd have included much more plot, then the film would have been criticized for running too long and for failing to deliver on this or that other aspect.
And if it had gone for some deep philosophical or social message, then people would have been lining up to attack it in the same way that they did for The Dark Knight.
Best superhero movie ever? I can't say for sure, but I'd rank it in the top two, at least.
