I spent just short of 4 years in Germany. When I first got there, American fast food
was non-existent (there was one Kentucky Fried Chicken -- I think in Munich and
one Pizza Hut up north somewhere -- though there were TONS of good independent
Italian pizzerias around town).

Now, German culture was so rational and healthy about sex that, unless you were
an EXTREME social stumbler, a young man didn't have too many problems finding
willing, even eager partners. For those stumblers, there was even a fallback solution
of a legal redlight district.

My theory is that these circumstances lessened the effects of sexual frustrations
and unfulfilled desires to the point where the usual erotic dreams weren't
subconsciously self-therapeutic (I don't remember having any after awhile), but
what frustrated ALL of us was our inability to get a tasty, tasty burger/chili dog, etc.

None of us realized that this was anything other than an experience unique to
each of us... and we all felt vaguely guilty and even ashamed about it. Until...

... a bunch of us were sitting around a campfire out in the field one night when
someone VERY reluctantly and VERY embarrassedly "confessed" that they were
having "erotic" dreams about fast food. They weren't having sex with it or even
sexual activity with it... but the dreams were very realistic and very very sensual --
they were enjoying in their (OK, our) dreams what they weren't getting IRL.

Though there wasn't a clearcut winner as to what was universally missed, we
realized eventually that it was happening to each and every one of us.
