(15,075 posts)Every doctor knows that. Every politician should learn and act on it.
But politicians are creatures that choose a particular "point of view," and then defend it to the death.
The best thing I can say about Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is that he's a divisive, mean-spirited, hateful, motherfucker.
This is a man who is trying to make the world a worse place in which sane people can dwell.
Do no harm?? This guy is doing as much as he can to inflict harm. It's past time for human beings to consider politicians like this an enemy of a sane world.

(54 posts)due to the fact that they have an R by their name, regardless of their level of sanity or stupidity. Texas is currently a roughly 60/40 R majority state that will gradually become more purple over the next decade due to the fact that it is becoming more urban (people moving in from bluer states) and more Latino. Most of the largest cities (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso) are already Democratic majority. Certain officials like the Lt Gov and Atty Gen were nominated with tea party support over more mainstream candidates, as was Cruz. Gohmert represents a very rural district in East Texas that may as well be part of Mississippi. We do have some very fine Dems in Congress representing urban areas, including Julian Castro's twin brother Joaquin in San Antonio. I assure you, the R officials in this state are just as appalling to many of us as they are to you.

(5,376 posts)We're blessed with two Democratic senators (Wyden, Merkley) and, all but one, very progressive US Reps, not to mention a whole lot of beautiful scenery statewide. But kudos to you for living in one of the most gorgeous parts of WA. The San Juan Islands are simply breath-taking!

(7,768 posts)Highway 101 is one of my favorite spots on earth. Oregon had the foresight to preserve so much of the spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline! I believe the area down near Brookings (though remote ) is magical. Rivers, wild unspoiled ocean, Redwoods, sigh....

(5,376 posts)The battle to preserve Oregon's coast for public use was a long and hard-fought effort, but next year is the 50th anniversary of the Beach Bill which won the battle for public access. We'll celebrate that--stay tuned for details! Maybe you can join the festivities!
Cheers!

(45,615 posts)it needs to be very clear who are the good guys with guns, and that's why we have police.
Why do these gun nuts have such delusional fantasies of shooting a mass shooter?

He is playing purely for the right wing voters who elect right wing loonies.
This is his career and he sees this tragedy as an opportunity for promotion.

Tempted as I am to say "Texit? Bring it!" It's illegal and would lead to people of color in that state suffering an even worse fate than what they endure now.
The dynamite option (above) is worth exploring. If nothing else, it would raise the collective IQ of Texas.

(68 posts)Per Alan Colmes, the protestors were mostly gone or leaving when the shooter started shooting. If Colmes is correct, this statement by Lt. Gov. isn't even true. Also the comment seems racist to me.
