Related: About this forumMorning Joe can't think of a unionized company. They must not have heard of GE. You know the boss
The Morning Joe crew was on an anti-union tear this morning, claiming the union label on a company means "sell." Mika Brzezinski went so far as to say of unions: "They cripple the system that makes a company work." Collectively, the journalists on Morning Joe couldn't name a single "successful" unionized company.
This says more about their qualifications to discuss public policy and labor relations than it says about unions. To pick just one obvious example, UPS is unionized -- and the company made more than $3 billion last year. That's "billion" with a "b," and those are profits, not revenues.
Oh, what the heck, let's take one more example. GE is one of the world's largest companies; in 2006, its revenues were greater than the gross domestic products of 80 percent of UN nations. The company made more than $18 billion in 2008 -- again, billion with a b, and again, those are profits, not revenue. All that despite (or, perhaps, because of) the fact that 13 different unions represent GE workers.
Oh, and GE owns NBC-Universal, which owns MSNBC, which pays Joe Scarborough a handsome salary (and the unionized workers who help get his show on the air considerably less.)
Does Joe Scarborough think NBC and GE are not "successful" companies? Does Mika Brzezinski think the unionized workers she no doubt interacts with every day are crippling her ability to do her job, or her employer's ability to be successful?

(115,681 posts)Pilots at all major airlines except JetBlue belong to a union. I guess Joe doesn't fly much, or maybe he doesn't want to entrust his life to a bunch of union thugs like Captain Sullenberger, the guy who landed the A320 in the Hudson River and saved the lives of 140 people.

That is pretty stupid, though, that they couldn't name a successful company! Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest host that train wreck!

(32,723 posts)All we hear about is the management version of a Union making demands. On the other side of the coin a Union promises management to provide a trustworthy workforce that will produce a product up to specs, on time and within budget.

UPS
"What can brown do for you?"
All the drivers belong to a union.

(26,325 posts)Never have a problem with UPS. The driver is a regular and knows how to get packages delivered. Fedex? Not so much. If I get something sent Fedex I know I'm driving to the facility.

(6,855 posts)The UPS driver that services the store I work at says that being in a union also makes it extremely difficult to remove a bad driver.
He related an instance where a driver almost ran a car off the road because the UPS driver was having a bad day and had a bout of road rage. He said the police were even called to try to find this guy after the person that was almost run off had called them.
That UPS driver was simply put on two weeks suspension and then let back in as a driver. UPS wanted to fire him but the union wouldn't allow it.

(26,325 posts)And I agree with the union that "almost" running someone off the road should not be a cause for loss of employment.
Smells like bullshit.

(975 posts)I worked for over 25 years and retired from a GE plant that was non-union. When the union negotiated their contract we would get a percentage of what the union plants workers got, still good money, but the downside was that many of the other bennies in the union contract also did not apply to us non-union workers. We had no one to fight for us against management decisions. So we had a employee set up "grievance" committee, that we had to do our own paperwork and fight our own battles with management. If I remember correctly there were 5 employees and 2 managers on each "grievance" committee and even though one would think the employees had the advantage in this situation........ well management could overrule the committee decision. If they did not agree then they could send the dispute to corporate and they were the final arbiters in the dispute. It is not fun fighting with management I can attest to that.
Forgot to add that only about 25% of GE plants were union at that time probably less now....... NAFTA.
