Yes, we had the solid south at one point. Yes, my native south is racist. Yes, in some respects, FDR was racist. But what about a new deal type of Democrat that wasn't racist? You know, like Johnson or JFK? How can we counter economic injustice today? Just my two cents in posting this again. Have a great evening.

(3,186 posts)Yes, Bernie is far more progressive on social issues than Hillary or their R candidates, but I'm sure that some of them would be willing overlook that if he is able to address their 'bread and butter' issues.
That is why he gets R support in Vermont. In fact, I seem to recall reading somewhere that he routinely gets 25% of them.
Rural R's in the NE are slightly different than those in the south (they are generally not very religious, for example) but I don't think that would hurt him either. Many of those bible thumper types are supportive of Jewish people.

Why hasn't he made great inroads in the AA Dem community in the South? My guess that would come before White Repubs.

Bernie is an old White man telling Black people what is best for them. Along with that he hasn't identified with the Black community lately. I know he marched with Dr King. But as the song goes, "what have you done for me lately."

(11,417 posts)a Goldwater girl. She liked that he was different but she took the side of Lyndon Johnson in a debate and has been a Democrat after.
People think for themselves even AA folks if you don't know it
Of course you were only trying to score a couple of points on a board so you can be excused.

No way in hell would Bernie win the south.
I love that song however!

(52,589 posts)The south is rightwing propaganda central when it comes to her. However, if enough debates were allowed, he could make inroads. Most would probably occur after the primary though.

(84,711 posts)I tend to think the Southern Repubs will go with Trump or Carson if they manage to stay in. The Evangelicals definitely love Carson and they still have so much power.
On the Dem side I wonder what will happen if Hillary is the nominee and people begin to realize that Bill will be in the White House. How older voting, non-Evangelical white Dems feel about Bill (remembering his past history) might come into play. In that case who will they vote for? I still can't understand the black voters love of the Clintons given their policies that we now know were harmful to the country with the all the deregulation they supported setting the stage for the Income Inequality, Media & Corporate Control of our lives and Wall Street starting down the road to the Financial Crisis all finished off by Bush II. Don't get me wrong, I was a huge Clinton fan and worked to get him elected. But, his DLC policies didn't turn out the way we thought and the aftermath has caused alot of pain for many people and the country. And, yet Hillary's numbers among black voters are very high so I assume they must have felt Bill's deregulation policies were a good thing.
If we have another financial meltdown I think Bernie could get support. But, without more debates it will probably hard for him to get the deep South support he would need unless the voting white dems and independents decide that Hillary just isn't for them. And, who knows, there may be many black voters who just aren't being counted who want someone besides Clinton II who would support him on his policies for reform.
