Earth's molten iron core is responsible for the mag field. Wonder why Mars doesn't have one? Was earth hit with more iron-bearing meteors during its formation?

The old assumption was that, planets forming nearer the center of the solar nebula would contain more heavy elements, like iron and nickel. Right now, all the old assumptions are being challenged as we discover more and more exoplanet systems.
