(2,065 posts)That's an archaic medical term for - poop! My given name just happens to be David, and several years back, on the back cover of a holistic magazine in the Southern California area, I saw a full page ad for the services and products of a certain herbalist named - David. It was written in the form of a personal testimony, with the author claiming that she didn't "poop like a champ" on David's herbal products, like others did, but that her body was still detoxifying. That always gave me a hearty chuckle to read that, and it has stuck with me ever since.
That's interesting what the video said in the beginning about Hippocrates' claim that all diseases originated in the gut, because that's also the basic claim of Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, as well. According to Ayurveda, Vata diseases originate in the colon and lower GI tract, Pitta diseases originate in the Pylorus, Duodenum, biliary system and middle GI tract, and Kapha diseases originate in the upper GI tract. In the Tibetan system, Vata is Wind; in the Greek system, it is Melancholy, or Black Bile. In the Tibetan System, Pitta is Bile; in the Greek system, it is Choler, or Yellow Bile. In the Tibetan system, Kapha is Phlegm; it is also Phlegm in the Greek system as well.

(2,065 posts)I'm sure you would say that we have things in our environment, like pesticide residues, that are toxic - that do biochemical, physiological and metabolic damage to the cells, organs and tissues of the body. A relatively small dose of a pesticide will kill an insect, or an herbicide an unwanted plant; that same dose, or even less, won't kill us, but it certainly isn't doing our bodies any good, and the natural physiological protective response of the body, if it has the innate energy and vitality to do so, is to eliminate these toxic substances that harm the functioning of the body if at all possible. Increase the dosage of these well-known toxins to a certain point, and you will get a lethal dose that can kill you. Certain industrial solvents, such as the acetone that the guy who gets high on airplane glue sniffs out of a plastic bag, are also known toxins; sniff too much, and you get terminal liver damage.
The other source of toxins, besides exogenous toxins from our environment, are toxins that are created endogenously within the body by metabolic and eliminatory organs that aren't fully doing their job of removing metabolic wastes or residues from the body. These metabolic wastes, or toxins, are merely the residue that remains after the body has extracted, assimilated and metabolized everything that it can use out of the food and drink consumed. Eliminatory organs that aren't doing their job properly will allow the buildup of higher levels of these metabolic wastes or byproducts, which are also called toxins.
So no need to get all suspicious and skeptical - toxins are a natural fact of life, and the better our bodies handle and detoxify / eliminate them, the healthier we are.

(22,801 posts)Can you site some research to back up the claim that clay "absorbs toxins" in the human digestive tract?

(28,936 posts)I should have pointed out that I didn't agree with the pseudo-science bs in this video when I first posted it. I was posting it more for humor and the Bristol scale which is educational.
