SALEM, N.J. (CBS) A fast-food worker in full uniform viciously attacked a young mother in front of the victims young son and the entire attack was caught on tape.
The attack happened Tuesday in the city of Salem, New Jersey and video of the assault was later posted on Facebook.
The suspect has been identified by the Salem City Police Department as 25-year-old Latia Harris. When apprehended, Salem City Police Chief John Pelura, III says Harris faces charges of aggravated assault and two counts of terroristic threats.

(4,079 posts)As a first step, she should have her hands cut off, and then someone should wail away on her face for a while in front of the person she loves (assuming she's capable of loving anyone) the most.
But so, too, should the bystanders be punished. I think the most heinous crime in this video is those five or six people who stand around watching as this woman is brutally beaten in front of her child. What the FUCK is wrong with people???

(9,350 posts)There is no need to go as far as to cut off her hands. She just needs to be put in jail for a time. After that she should be given some conflict resolution training.

(111,339 posts)Harris is HUGE and out of control. Likely the videos will all be subpoenaed and presented at the trial if she doesn't plea bargain down to simple assault.
However, announcing to Harris that the cops were on the way might have shortened the beating if any of them had been interested in anything besides bragging rights on You Tube.
Harris needs to be off the street.

(33,224 posts)It also has the merit of avoiding the confusion exemplified by the very first post in this thread. (Giving the benefit of the doubt that misrepresentation wasn't the intent)
What is it about the incident above compared to this one:
That explains the differences in bystander reaction?

Particularly in the area of crime reporting. The attributes chosen to describe the victim and perpetrators especially.

(33,982 posts)Possible gender or race or both factored into it.
Multiple vs. zero responders isn't unusual. Once ONE person stands up and intervenes, people usually come forward. It's that initial person willing to act that is so hard to get.

(9,350 posts)I think the major difference in the two videos is that in the video from the OP there is a woman beating another woman whereas in the video in your post it is a man beating/hitting a woman. I think if a black man had hit an elderly black woman the black people in the video from the OP would have stopped the incident. Also, the woman being beaten in the video in the OP is white. The black people in the video may have decided not to intervene because she was white. If the woman being beaten had been black they may have stopped the event. In addition, maybe the people in the video knew why the woman was being beaten and thought she deserved to be beaten. The fast food worker was saying something about how she might lose her job. It seems she (the woman being beaten) had said something about the fast food worker. Maybe the bystanders thought she should not have said anything.

(33,224 posts)In my experience, woman on woman violence creates cognitive conflict. Male bystanders are supposed to protect the victim (a woman) but they are also supposed to keep their hands off women (such as the attacker).
The headline chosen was what I found interesting. And downthread people are still assuming things about the sex of the people involved based on what the headline didn't say.

(9,350 posts)I guess I should have figured your post was about the difference between genders of those attacking and those being attacked.

(9,350 posts)I think it was two women. The fast food worker sounds, to me, like a woman.

(8,175 posts)Why did this happen? I didn't see anything in this video to provoke an attack like that.

(9,350 posts)It would have been nice if the person with the camera would have tried to stop the attack instead of recording the incident. It seems it would have been better if he/she called the police, or at least pretended that he/she was calling the police.
