(24,396 posts)"If the government tells you you have to do something" is not that same as "the government says you can't do something."
The government says you can't murder people. The government says you can't have a parade without a permit. The government says you can't drive a car without a license. The government says you can't discriminate against people if you run a business that is licensed by the state.
None of those actions/laws make you do anything. You can still discriminate against others in your personal life (and take the consequences). But once you engage in an activity that is regulated by the state - like running a restaurant - then there are certain "do nots" that come with the territory.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]People being discriminated against have to martyr themselves, and become community organizers and activists to generate public support in order to gain their own basic human rights and justice, and the government has no business stepping in to "force" fair treatment by those doing the discriminating.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]I've known a couple of these people very well. They just stand everything on it's head and claim that's the way it's supposed to be. End of discussion.
They claim the mantle of "reason" and "objectivity," but only from their point of view.
If their freedom infringes on your freedom, well, that's just too bad; but don't ever let your freedom come even close to edging theirs, because that's perceived as a direct personal attack and they respond with vicious malevolence.

Noam Chomsky quote that simplifies a great deal:
Now, the Libertarian Party, is a *capitalist* party. It's in favor of what *I* would regard a *particular form* of authoritarian control.
Namely, the kind that comes through private ownership and control, which is an *extremely* rigid system of domination -- people have to... people can survive, by renting themselves to it, and basically in no other way...
I do disagree with them *very* sharply, and I think that they are not.. understanding the *fundamental* doctrine, that you should be free from domination and control, including the control of the manager and the owner.

They're angry because deep down, they know they are conning themselves and you won't join their religion. Plain and simple. IMHO. My technique is to lead the children out of their paradise and get them thinking of the basics. You might ask them to read those to see why you don't agree. Let them prove what they are saying.

If your friends drool over Ayn Rand, I have a lot on that, too.

(2,088 posts)They are idealists. They think that people out of the goodness of their heart will choose the right thing, choose to be productive, choose to protect the environment, choose to be charitable, choose to practice medicine for free for the poor and so on.

(2,088 posts)And also some for which "Libertarianism" is just a convenient excuse for actual racsim. But that young guy in the video does seem like an idealist to me. I think there are quite a few who genuinely believe that their ideology will make the world a better place.

(10,893 posts)most of his supporters are around my age range (I'm 21). They say younger voters tend to be more progressive, but he's essentially the ultimate regressive out of those four candidates, considering his stance on Civil Rights, marriage equality, evolution, global warming, and his tax plan.

(57,081 posts)like people have the right to "target" even if its wrong and Ayn Rand will forgive you if you stiff a panhandler or a waiter. You don't want to be a target, stop being the target. Its the KIDS fault he got shot by the odd little neighborhood watch guy. He should have taken a little "personal responsibility" for not being a target. I can't wait till the elections.

(37,160 posts)It's not like this is all theoretical and nobody has real experience with it.
Say, Clyde, what heppens when a majority thinks it's just dandy to limit your rights, because they think that's the natural order of things. Good luck with your "freedom" when when no one recognizes you have any right to it and the law (or at least the enforcement thereof) is on their side.
