(23,864 posts)...the Jubilee was fucking EPIC.
This is like one of two or three people I've seen on the internet that I'd actually love to hang out with.

(35,568 posts)I missed that one. I didn't start watching him until the Jimmy Savile scandal and he hit that one out of the park, many times.
One of these days, when we have time lol, I want to comb through his other videos.
So far I like him the best when he's ranting against social injustice

(1,259 posts)The latest one is a bit odd. Hard to know how serious he is.

(33,982 posts)more people are not in his current emotional state over this.
I'm embarrassed too, as an American. It seems we may well have started all this cyber war nonsense with China on some level. That's on us, if some of these allegations are true. I'm embarrassed. Without even my knowledge, these things were done in my name, as a citizen and a taxpayer.

(45,358 posts)Apparently this guy just started paying attention last week.
Where has he been? Does the Bush/Cheney/Blair regime not ring a bell?

(35,568 posts)Because you have a conscience and care about your fellow human being?
The ones who need to be embarrassed are the ones who did this and enabled it. Instead they're just digging their heels in and throwing things everywhere hoping to distract people. Not in my name, any more than yours. I hope that together, so many of us together, can force change.

(35,568 posts)I don't think most people have stopped to process that part, about how massive the machine Snowden is trying to slow down is. And how vindictive and murderous it is. Carlyle lost over $80million in one day in Booz Allen Hamilton stock alone. All the governments we've been fucking with (Venezuela comes to mind) have further proof of how untrustworthy our corporate machine is. I welcome this but stand in awe that that kid left his comfortable life, his warm bed with his lovely girlfriend, his family, his friends, everything but his body and mind to stand up and say no. Thanks for watching it.

(24,721 posts)At first, I was furious that Snowden was creating yet another scandal for Obama, due to the timing. When I watched the interview online, though, I sensed a sincere effort on his part to do the right thing, that his motivation wasn't political.
So I got curious, & with an open mind, began to research. Funny thing is, a not-so-complimentary OP with a link to an article the other day led me to another article about the HUGE amount of money that is poured into just the facilities used for surveillance in Utah & across the country. (Since then, I'm learning that that was the tip of the iceberg -- there are tens of thousands of facilities around the world -- we must be paying trillions of dollars on this venture.)
That got my dander up. While the Republicans in congress are showing the utmost contempt for the most vulnerable people, bellyaching about the deficit, they have no problem spending trillions of dollars to watch for "terrorists" -- & the word "terrorists" in their mindset seems to be arbitrary; it's whoever they think of as a "security threat", which is scary considering how horribly mean & punitive they can be outside of their bubble.
If one takes the president out of the equation (I believe this goes beyond any president's power) & gave serious thought about this, they would be as startled about this as I am. This isn't about politics; this is about how our country's priorities have been desecrated. The Hooverites in congress are contemptuous about the most vulnerable citizens, which happens to be the majority, yet they're willing to spend trillions of dollars on a what-if scenario.
Yet MrScorpio's recent OP about our naivete was depressingly spot on. This venture is so huge, with so much money thrown into it, I don't see any turning back.

(35,568 posts)and kept an open mind because this isn't about one President or one party. This is a bipartisan, political mess.
Everything you wrote is spot on. You made me remember an interview I watched recently. President Correa of Ecuador was asked why he and several other Leftist leaders were able to come in and make sweeping changes for their people but the US couldn't and he made a very simple but astute observation. He replied that in most of Latin America, they have the power to manage their people, to lead and make decisions whereas in the US, Presidents are elected to manage a system.
I think he's very sincere too. You don't give up everything he did unless it's been eating at you for a while.
It really concerns me how little this sort of corporate behavior bothers those outside of technology circles. Society really seems to have developed an unquestioning obedience towards spooky types.
I wonder, how well would envelopes that became transparent under magical federal candlelight have sold in 1750? 1800? 1850? 1900? 1950? Did we get to where we are today via a slippery slope that was entirely within our control to stop, or was it an relatively instantaneous sea change that sneaked in undetected because of pervasive government secrecy?

I think we'll be forced to turn back by 1, our own people because this madness of pouring trillions into those big black holes while people have no jobs, no homes, no retirements can't continue and 2, by world governments who have no intention of trusting us with their corporate, economic, industrial, scientific and political secrets. I think angry pressure is going to be coming from all directions now and some years from now things will be very different.

(10,597 posts)Put a BP cuff on him! The top of his head is going to blow through the roof of his car! Get the nitroglycerin, fast! Thank you Catherina! Holy Moly, that was persuasive. Chris Hedges says it his way, and this Chunky Mark says it his way, but both are right on the mark. We need to kick this.

(35,568 posts)It's something that can't be said enough. If everyone starts saying it their own way, we may just get there.
Yesterday morning when I heard what Chris Hedges said I couldn't believe it! He was sitting there saying exactly what I hoped that SOMEONE would say! I really enjoyed Chunky Mark!

UK, US, switch a few names around, change a few acronyms and it's the same story here.
I feel the same about both of them but ChunkyMark taps into my anger, you can't stay calm listening to him lol. And never listen to him while you're doing the dishes!
I love this guy, but I worry about him getting so upset!
