Commentary: Dumbest idea in history? Race
Posted on Tuesday, January 1, 2013
Leonard Pitts Jr. | The Miami Herald

On New Year’s Day, it will be 150 years since Abraham Lincoln set black people free from slavery.

And there is no such thing as black people.

The first of those statements is not precisely true; a clarification will be offered momentarily. The second statement is not precisely false. And the clarification begins here:

It is a clarification needed not simply because it helps us to better understand the milestone of history we commemorate this week, but also because it helps us to better understand America right here in the tumultuous now. The Republican Party, to take an example not quite at random, enters the new year still nursing its wounds after an election debacle most observers laid upon its inability to sway Hispanics, young voters and, yes, black people. Then there is the Trayvon Martin shooting, the mass incarceration phenomenon, the birther foolishness.

1. Fascinating article. Though, regarding the emancipation proclamation,

It did free some slaves. Yes, it ignored the slave states that were not rebelling, but it freed slaves in rebelling states, and could be enforced immediately in areas where the union army was in control.

According to Wikipedia, that was 20,000-50,000 slaves. Plus more as the union army advanced.

2. Brilliant.

Leonard Pitts is the best writer in the country, in my opinion.

3. You know what else is a dumb idea?

And it does NOT really exist either. "Free Markets"

Markets only exist because of governments. Take off all government involvement in property and trade (I mean all, not just regulation of products that are sold but take off court protections of patents, contracts and police protection of property) and see if you have any markets remaining.

The arbitrary ideas of race and free trade have killed more people and ruin more lives than any disease.

4. A Reply..:)

Great post. Thank you for sharing such information with the readers like us. This post is really informative and fascinating enough for the readers of the post as it is talking about the historical times where under the president-ship of Abraham Lincoln the black people were removed from slavery. And according to him there is no such thing as black people.
This post has really provided us with some of the relevant facts and made us aware about the past scenarios.

5. His point, and it is accurate, is that there is no "black race" (or any other "race" either).

If you must generalize at all about people, put them in categories, that's not the way to do it. There are much better ways, most especially native culture (where they grew up), language and family culture, and genetics ( cladistics, who their ancestors were). We are mixing genetically so much now (Boy, that's got to drive the racists nuts, eh?) that our genetic material is becoming well-dispersed through the population again, which is a very good thing long-term, it gives more robust chances to survive in the evolutionary sense.

Welcome to DU.

6. The problem with racism is that it is not useful

Let's pretend that "all dark-skinned people are lazy, stupid and incompetent".

OK, a few years ago I was working in an area where by pure coincidence all the network technicians were black. The network ran flawlessly, what few problems we had (blown switches) were fixed instantly and they kept on top of new technology only acquiring what would work best for us. In staff meetings I often had no idea what they were talking about and I know my way around networks.

If that's "lazy, stupid and incompetent" then what does that make me???

Also, there are outliers to any group. Making judgements about the whole gives me nothing to handle the exceptions. If I'm using our meme at hiring time, I'm going to miss out on these guys and who knows what I'll end up with.
