When 9-11 Families were Shedding Tears – Thompson Becomes a Profiteer
http://www.politiscoop.com/us-politics/wisconsin-politics/1592-when-9-11-families-were-shedding-tears-thompson-becomes-a-profiteer.htmlWisconsin On September 11, 2001, the United States of America suffered the worst act of terrorism on its home soil that the nation has ever seen. The nearly 3,000 people killed from the attack that day do not reflect the totality of the brutal atrocity perpetrated against man-kind. There were many heroes from all walks of life who descended to ground zero to help in finding those who were still alive, as well as to remove those whose lives were taken at the whim of those who bought into an extremist ideology.
In 9/11s aftermath, 20% of Americans knew someone hurt or killed in the attacks. 146,100 people lost their jobs, 422,000 New York residents suffered from some form of post-traumatic stress disorder, 300 firefighters went on leave for respiratory problems by January 2002. All of these people and many more have been affected by the events that unfolded that day and then there were others who at some point stopped shedding tears and became profiteers.
Tommy Thompson, the former Health and Human Services secretary under George Bush, made millions treating 9/11 victims, invoked the wrath of 9/11 heroes on Tuesday by rolling out an ad that tries to profit off the terror attacks (again)-- this time for Thompson's Senate race. In the Thompson ad, he alleged that Baldwin doesn't support the victims of 9/11 because she voted against a resolution in 2006 that honored them.
The Thompson campaign left out the fact that Tammy Baldwin voted for the 9/11 health bills and for 9/11 victims many times. However, Thompson chooses to chastise Baldwin for voting against a bill that did nothing but politicize the tragedy, rather than aiding the victims of the heinous crime.
Today, Baldwin shot back with an ad that pointed to the facts and shed the light on just who was looking to help the victims of that day and who was looking at those victims as dollar signs. In the ad Baldwin says:
"Tommy Thompson's ad is a disgrace," says the narrator in Baldwin's ad, which is running statewide. "The truth: Time and again, Tammy Baldwin has supported honoring victims of 9/11. And Tommy Thompson? He got a government contract to provide health care to 9/11 first responders. But Tommy took advantage; leaving them without the care they were promised. Tommy Thompson, personally, made over $3 million off the deal. Tommy Thompson should be ashamed."
