I was introduced to the Okinawan resistance to US militarization by the late great Chalmers Johnson. This latest initiative is a turn by the empire to counter China, and also known in 'inside the beltway' parlance as the Pacific Pivot. Besides the soci-economic and political consequences, this area is sensitive ecologically and hosts endangered birds and marine mammals to the extent that Green Peace has widely publicized the ecological affects.
