NORTHEAST'S FIRST SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM EXPECTED

Source: AP

BY ALBERT STUMM

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The first significant winter storm of the season is expected for the Northeast's major cities this weekend in the form of a messy mix of rain, snow and sleet along Interstate 95, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said Thursday it was still too early to determine the exact track of the storm, but some areas could expect up to 7 inches or more of snow.

The storm should arrive in the Philadelphia region Friday night and dump from 1 to 4 inches by Saturday morning, causing dangerous road conditions, said Valerie Meola, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

"Especially during the morning," she said. "There will be a lot of that accumulation then, and then rain will come and wash it all away."

It cold some kind of nasty cold over here, too, and I have to run down to Switzerland this morning, where there won't be much relief from the cold or the wind. There are times I wish I could retire to Hawai'i, but with my luck, I'd arrive in time for a typhoon, an earthquake and a tsunami, all in my first week.

We had our 2nd worst winter on record last year (2013 - 2014) and worst on record 3 years before that (2009 - 2010). What had previously been the worst (1995 - 1996) was smashed by 2010 and is now 3rd worst. The 2010 - 2011 was twice our normal as it is.

I'm going to start this now before this season really gets going -->

It always mean some warm front is bring a ton of moisture with it, so that moisture can be dumped as snow in the Mountains of Central Pennsylvania.

But at least the temperatures will drop to the teens on Monday and that is to cold for snow.
