The Christmas sweater-wearing sheep who became the viral story of the day across the country Tuesday was back home with his family Tuesday night.

Margaret Vazquez retrieved her sheep, named Gage, at the Nebraska Humane Society about 6:30 p.m.

A friend of Vazquez’s daughter, who saw news of the sheep online, told Vazquez to call the shelter because they had found a sheep.

“I was so happy that we got him,” she said. “I was worried that someone would eat him or something bad would happen.”

Hosts yes this is national news. Snip: The festive sheep made national news, with articles on Gawker, Time and Yahoo News, along with other outlets. Twitter users started the hashtag #ChristmasSheep to spread the word.

I'm glad it all turned out OK, but isn't putting a wool sweater on a sheep a little redundant? Arkansas Granny Dec 2014 #2

It would have been even better if the owner had dyed and spun the sheep's own wool for that sweater.

Can't resist repeating the groan-worthy joke I learned as a kid:

What do you get if you cross a sheep with a kangaroo?

A woolly jumper!

Vazquez said Gage will jump on the bed, sleep with her and go on family trips in their car.

“I dress him up and put little shoes on him,” she said. “He’s my pet, he’s my kid.”
