Pakistani schools network observes anti-Malala day
Source: Times of India
ISLAMABAD: An association of Pakistani schools held an "I am not Malala" day on Monday, condemning young Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai for what it called her support for controversial novelist Salman Rushdie.
Education campaigner Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban in October 2012 but recovered and went on to win this year's Nobel peace prize.
The 17-year-old has been hailed around the world for standing up for girls' rights to education, but the response to her in Pakistan has not been universally positive, with some seeing her as a "Western agent" on a mission to shame her country.
The All Pakistan Private Schools Federation last year barred its members from buying Malala's memoir "I am Malala" because of what the group said was its "anti-Pakistan and anti-Islam content."

I am speechless but not surprised one bit.

(6,622 posts)many might say that about the United States, given some of our government's policies. Most Pakistanis are good, decent people just trying to live their lives, just like you'll find all over the world.

(6,622 posts)I don't want to be judged by the extremists in my country or in my religion any more than I should judge others by the extremists among them.
My son just returned from living in Pakistan for a year. It's unfortunate that the extremists are terrorizing the majority of the people.

(4,490 posts)If you want to claim the majority of a nation's population are terrorists you have to provide evidence, not the other way around. You can't prove a negative.

(10,745 posts)You know why, though? Pakistan would be so much more screwed up than it already is.....we're talking North Korea, at least, if that was even halfway true. Hell, America is by no means majority devoted racist(and hell, this applies to even just "white" America alone!) and this country already has it's problems. And if they WERE.....well, you can guess where I'm going with that, right?

(2,749 posts)How awful these people are still so steeped in violence and the idea that females are of lesser quality and must be silenced by any means necessary should they speak out about their plight. How they are ever going to evolve is a mystery to me, but I don't think we should be paying them to continue to believe this way.

(6,241 posts)There have been an anti-Pakistani post, saying it needs to be bombed back to the stone age. The post was hidden, as it should have been. But most of the posts I've read have been just angry about the bigots and sexists over there doing their thing. I'd, personally, like to stop aid from going over there until they stop this garbage. I won't say "Most Pakistanis are terrible" or "Most Pakistanis are wonderful" because I honestly don't know. But the ones that are making the news in this OP are horrible people that don't deserve any help from us. This is about their intolerance and the sheer stupidity of their views, and not because of their religion or race.

(11,014 posts)even when they commit atrocities in the name of Islam or take actions such as observing an "anti-Malala day?"
The world should just remain silent and say nothing/do nothing because the poor innocent Muslims are misunderstood and persecuted?
By the way -- I belong to a so called "pagan" religion and we have done fine for thousands of years. We still do quite well despite scores of brutal Muslim invasions, tortures, killings, rapes and forced conversions perpetrated by the invaders from the 11th through the 15th century. Are you trying to say that Islam of today is any different from those dark times? If it is different, in what way?
In my opinion, Islam has not changed at all -- the only thing that has changed is the balance of military and economic power. If Islam became economically and militarily more powerful than others, there is a very good chance that the world will go back to the dark times of invasions, tortures, killings and rapes.
"Islam will dominate the world" is the battle cry of people like Anjem Chaudary and his followers -- do you think differently?
