Source: Business Insider
Just announced by the company:
Brian Dunn, the CEO of big box giant Best Buy, is resigning.
It was just on March 29 that the CEO announced a massive restructuring and layoff plan.
The company has been getting creamed on all fronts, especially in the world of media, where the rise of digital media has totally gutted a key part of the company's business.

Best Buy Donates $100,000 to Anti-Gay Candidate Tom Emmer
So much has been parlayed back and forth in the media regarding Targets $150,000 donation to support anti-gay marriage Minnesota GOP candidate Tom Emmer, but not much has been said about Best Buys $100,000 donation to the same controversial candidate. Were you aware that there is currently an effort to boycott Best Buy along with Target? If you were not previously aware, you are now. The official Boycott Best Buy Facebook page can be accessed here: Boycott Best Buy Until They Cease Funding Anti-Gay Politics. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Boycott-Best-Buy-Until-They-Cease-Funding-Anti-Gay-Politics/132453820129363
With awareness and knowledge comes responsibility and many around the world are calling for consumers to boycott two of the most beloved stores in the LGBT community Target and Best Buy. Anti-gay homophobic GOP candidate Tom Emmer not only vows to veto any marriage equality bill that comes across his desk, he also has close ties to an anti-gay Christian rock band that advocates the hateful message of death to gays. Death to gays? Are we living in the 17th Century or something? This is extremely outrageous, hateful and beyond unbelievable.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has suggested referencing the following verbiage for anyone wishing to share their outrage and write to Best Buy and/or Target.

(25,934 posts)I hope this reverberates throughout corporate HQ everywhere. At least on the surface, some appear to be getting the message that their sponsorship has consequences, as seen by companies pulling their ads from that drug-addled gasbag's show (now extending to other RW hate factories) and corps pulling their support for ALEC.
This is not a time for self-congratulatory back-slapping, however; do not relent in the pressure that has been brought to bear.

(15,996 posts)When you have a $9.99 cat 5 cable priced at $39.99, there's a problem. That's when I stopped going there to buy anything.

(8,846 posts)Only to look over something that I'm going to buy cheaper online.
Ever since they charged me a 15% ($30) "restocking fee" on a GPS that didn't know where the fuck it was going.
Haven't spent a dime there since.

(15,996 posts)Went to one of their locations a while back to listen to a pair of B&W speakers that I will buy elsewhere

(8,846 posts)I went there to check out a MicroKorg synthesizer. $499 at Best Buy. $399 at Amazon affiliate. Better warranty too.

(4,528 posts)they lease the space.

(15,996 posts)They must lease the employees too at the one near me because the guys in the best buy shorts were in there selling the stuff.

(4,528 posts)and I was talking to the Magnolia room and that is how I found out. It's pretty high end and I do own B&W speakers myself. I have bought quite a bit at best Buy over the years. and it's Okay. It's not perfect but I have bought a at least 3 TV's and washer and dryer(LG), 3 computers and various other things(Cd's) and I never felt ripped off.
Do I buy cables there- of course not. I buy them at a local computer store(Delta) and cat 5 cables are $5.00
I buy some off the intranet and I buy some at big box stores. Big box has too be more expensive because they are paying for Real Estate.
I probably got the 50% off of the GPS's because I have bought enough over the years.
I've been to many worst stores and some better. The best big store for service is hand's down Nordstrom's expensive but old time service.

(15,996 posts)Now that I think of it, the cable I was after was a cat 5 crossover cable. Same cable just crossed over so you don't need a hub.
Found it down the street at a local computer shop for $9.99
Cue up Cee Lo as far as Best Buy is concerned

(550 posts)but when I used to be a line employee at Best Buy about 10 years ago, he used to visit my store in Brooklyn like, all the time. And I have to say, on a personal level, he was a really really nice guy. So, I don't wish bad on him.
That being said, his actions since then have been absolutely ridiculous. I'm not glad to see him out on his ass, especially considering how much of a severance package he probably walked away with (that absolutely came out of the pockets of the employees who bear the massive burden of keeping the company afloat), but it's good to see that common sense is starting to seep in.

(76 posts)It has been known as Worst Buy for years for good reason.

(4,528 posts)but they have done okay by me. I think in general they are helpful in the store. Are they high priced of course but all retailers are high on some things. I did buy a couple of Insignia GPS's and there was no way to get new maps. They gave me 50% on two Tom TOM GPS's. I was able to get the Tom Tom's at $75.00 each. Not many retailers would do that and my Insignia's were 2 years old.
And for you sports fans- The interim CEO is George Mikan's grandson. The man who invented the hook shot.

(15,996 posts)Back when Circuit City and Ultimate Electronics were in town, Best Buy was a decent place to shop. Ever since their competition disappeared around here, they've gone downhill

(4,528 posts)it was about 5 months ago and circuit city had been out at least a year. The magnolia room is leased space and not part of bestbuy.
AZ Progressive
(3,411 posts)I've gotten a 40 inch LCD TV there last year for $350, at the time quite a steal (and was better quality than a Sony TV I previously bought and returned for a much higher price at another retailer.) I've gotten great prices on a GPS and Portable DVD player (on black friday though) as well as a PC desktop computer and a Kinect. I've also gotten cameras and laptops there. I like the ease of needing to buy something and being able to get it the same day, and the ease of returning it, vs the hassle with internet retail. Fry's Electronics (out in the west here) is better but I don't live near one, and they aren't good IMO for sales of TV's and cameras (but really good for computer equipment.)
bayareaboy
(793 posts)And they are still having problems. Going into a Bestbuy is expensive and boring.
Don't start me on Target now!
You ever get the feeling that a union contract might have helped some stores?

(12,530 posts)Back in 2006-07, before too many people had smart phones and the ability to browse the Internet from just about anywhere, Best Buy had in-store computers that went to their "web site". But it wasn't the public website accessible at www.bestbuy.com. Instead, it was an intranet site with all the same items, but different pricing. In other words, they engaged in a conspiracy to defraud their customers for purposes of making a higher profit. I won't be sorry to watch them continue to wither on the vine.
