Romney using ethics exception to limit disclosure of Bain holdings

Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney, whose wealth has become a central issue in the 2012 campaign, has taken advantage of an obscure exception in federal ethics laws to avoid disclosing the nature and extent of his holdings.
By offering a limited description of his assets, Romney has made it difficult to know precisely where his money is invested, whether it is offshore or in controversial companies, or whether those holdings could affect his policies or present any conflicts of interest.

One might think that if one had gazillions of dollars invested, one would want to know what is was invested in.

(793 posts)release Bain holdings or Tax returns because both are based on bad figures from his Bain accounts.
Remember; what goes around comes around
he lied on his Bain accounts so his IRS returns have the same omissions.
So I ain't waiting for either.

(239 posts)This is a serious issue, imagine if Mr. Obama didn't disclose his finances.
If the Republicans can make as big a stink over a fictitious birth certificate issue then he Democratic party can do the same with Romney's money issues. He must provide a full disclosure to the American people.

Governor Romney provided 23 years worth of tax returns to the McCain campaign so they could determine if he would make a suitable vice president.

(21,925 posts)I wonder if it would open up the possibility of liability for McCain since he's a public official who would have knowledge of a crime and cover-up. There's got to be something pretty explosive in those records since Romney is so unwilling to release anything.

(7,403 posts)What are the ethics of using an ethics exemption to unethically hide that which you are legally required to report. And why hasn't the Federal Election Commission made a ruling on whether a confidentially agreement legally represents an ethics exemption. If that is the case then there is no disclosure law because everybody will in the future make sure they hide everything behind an alledged confidentially agreement. Romney must think he is a Supreme Court Justice to think that ethics rules don't apply to him.

The Republican political strategy is to take control of state governments while holding control of federal courts and the legislature. They don't give a damn about Presidents. Why should they?
