Anthony Brown Wins Democratic Nomination In Maryland Gubernatorial Primary
Source: HuffPo
Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown won the Democratic nomination in the race to succeed Gov. Martin O'Malley (D), the Associated Press reports.
Brown emerged from a field of candidates that also included Attorney General Doug Gansler and state Del. Heather Mizeur. He had held a commanding lead in the polls throughout the race and had picked up endorsements from much of Maryland's Democratic political establishment, including O'Malley, so his Tuesday evening win read as more of a coronation than a surprise.

(10,472 posts)He hasn't declared yet, but he's making it known that he wants to run.
I liked Brown, but I voted for Heather Mizeur instead. She's a real progressive, and was hoping to be the first GLBT governor in the country. But Brown is an excellent candidate and will beat whatever Teahadist the other side puts up for Governor.

I'm hoping her presence would shift things left on some issues. We'll see. I voted for her too.

(10,472 posts)Someone thinking like me!
BTW, the Repug challenger is Larry Hogan, a real estate developer from Anne Arundel County. Spouting the typical Repug lines about "get the government off of your backs... and into your bedrooms." Blah, blah, blah. He's going down.

(4,788 posts)because I like her stance on marijuana legalization and of course LGBT issues, but as I told Brown a week or so ago when he was at New Carrollton Metro station, I'd be proud to vote for him in November. It's not that I don't like Brown, and I think he'll be a remarkably effective governor when elected, but I'd also like a woman in the office for a change. Just so long as Hogan doesn't get the state house. He's a piece of work, that one is.

(35,703 posts)invoking Hogan, Sr.'s voting for articles of impeachment against Nixon, all the while making a very partisan attack on Brown, hardly even mentioning his supporters who got him the nomination or his primary opponents. Brown, on the other hand, was very gracious in thanking his supporters and giving credit to his primary opponents and looking forward in a positive way. Hogan talks about being within "single digits" of Brown, I don't know what polls he is looking at, because the WP poll had Brown way ahead. Hogan also was brazenly calling for the supporters of Mizeur and Gansler to back him in November, I can't see that happening on a very large scale, he might pick up a few Gansler voters. I thought about voting for Mizeur but didn't want to take any chance on tipping the election to Gansler - I just don't trust him and I think he would have done better had he focused less on Brown and sold himself a little more.

(20,450 posts)Both are far too principled to engage in those kinds of shenanigans. Won't happen. They will encourage all Democrats to rally behind Brown. And I don't think Anthony will have a problem, anyway. GOP will try to dip into the DEM vote and engage in voter suppression tactics. They always do, but they will fail.

(35,703 posts)I see no point in giving Republicans ammunition for the general election just to try to win a few more votes. And it usually doesn't work, anyway. Trying to tie Brown to O'Malley only helps Republicans. Everyone knows that the Lt. Governor really doesn't call the shots on policy and I did not like to see him using Republican arguments. Maryland is a great place to live and do business and the Hogan crap about everyone wanting to leave is just a political talking point. We have good roads, good schools and good public services for the most part. It costs money but Marylanders are not over taxed. We are doing a good job on the environment as well - the bull shit talk about rain taxes from Hogan are storm water fees, not rain taxes, and they only apply in the largest highly developed counties AND they are mandated by the EPA. If Gansler wants to help he should smack down Hogan on that.

(20,450 posts)At the end of the day, however, he will undoubtedly encourage his supporters to rally behind Brown.

He will continue O'Malley's legacy. I used to work with him when I was in the state legislature. He's more liberal than the larger public knows, but like most politicians, he has to have broad appeal and get into office to change things from within. He'll do Maryland proud.

(95,337 posts)That guy was a disaster for Maryland which also why he was just a one-termer, but his Lt. Governor Michael Steele has yet to win any addition elections after they got the boot!
