(Reuters) - Egypt's army-backed government has resigned, state-run Al Ahram said on its website on Monday in a report confirmed by an Egyptian official.

The newspaper, citing an unnamed source, said the decision was made after a 15-minute meeting of the cabinet. Army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is expected to run for president, was part of the cabinet, serving as defence minister.

Egypt interim government resigns unexpectedly.

Egypt's military-backed interim government has resigned, Prime Minister Hazem Beblawi has announced.

Mr Beblawi gave no reason for the decision in his televised statement.

The state-run al-Ahram newspaper, citing unnamed sources, reported that outgoing Housing Minister Ibrahim Mihlib was expected to succeed him.

Mr Beblawi was appointed prime minister in July after the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi following mass protests against his one-year rule.

There are still possibilities and there is still hope for something better.

The lesson to be learned: Assume nothing and don't be smug.

Or maybe they weren't enthusiastic enough about his desire to be publicly deified and have twenty thousand workers start construction of his personal pyramid before the end of the year? It's got to be something like that.

Egyptian President Adly Mansour has accepted the resignation of prime minister Hazem al-Beblawi and appointed Ibrahim Mahlab as his successor, a high-ranking source said Monday.

The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Ma’an that Mahlab will make limited changes to the cabinet formation. That will include removing ministers Maha al-Rabbat, Sharif Ismael, Taher Abu Zeid, Mohammad Abu Shadi, Ahmad Imam, and Mohammad Abd al-Mottaleb from their posts.

Mahlab, who held the position of housing minister, welcomed his appointment and met with minister of interior Mohamed Ibrahim, according to the source, an official in the presidency.

The government submitted its resignation to Mansour earlier on Monday, the cabinet said, in a move just weeks before a presidential poll.
