LOS ANGELES (AP) Jason Collins has become the first openly gay player to see action in an NBA game.
Collins, signed Sunday to a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn, reported into the game against the Los Angeles Lakers with 10:28 left in the second quarter and the Nets leading 35-26 after Nick Young made the first of his two free throws.
The crowd welcomed him with a nice ovation when public address announcer Lawrence Tanter announced his name.
Earlier, Collins said he was too busy trying to learn plays to worry about making history.

(297,216 posts)President Obama called NBA player Jason Collins Monday to offer his support after Collins announced he's gay, becoming the first openly gay major league professional athlete, CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett has learned.
The president offered congratulations and support on Collins' courage and willingness to be the first in the four dominant pro sports to make this announcement.
First lady Michelle Obama also showed her support for Collins on Twitter Monday.
"So proud of you, Jason Collins! This is a huge step forward for our country. We've got your back!" she tweeted, signing it "-mo," which indicates she - not an aide - sent the message.

(7,006 posts)The Next Story will be how Jason Collins ate a hamburger and that's HUGE NEWS. NOT!
Look Jason Collins was DUMPED by his old team because he's 35 years old with DECLINING SKILLS on the court. Jason Collins next, comes out after no team picked him and said, he's gay. Now Jason Collins -- a player with DECLINING SKILLS, dumped by his last team, instantly has a ten-day contract.
And his skills...well they have not improved a bit but hey, that does not matter to the thousand other guys with TALENT and SKILLS (and YOUNGER by the way) are waiting maybe forever to suit up for a CHANCE in the NBA.
If we where talking about Michael Sam, I would get it. Because the kid has TALENT and CLEAR SKILLS (who's cares who he prefers IMHO) but Jason Collins? Please. Jason is nothing but a marketing stunt. Plain and simple.
Meanwhile, let the kid with TALENT and SKILLS Michael Sam, make it in the NFL and show he has every right to be right there. Leave the rest of this drama off the turf and court...
