NH Chief: Report of gunman on Yale campus could be 'hoax'

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
Police believe a phone call where an unidentified person called police to report "his roommate" had intentions of shooting people is a "hoax."
The Yale University campus was told to shelter in place Monday morning.
The emergency call stated the unidentified man with a long gun was on his way to Yale University at about 9:30 a.m.
The alert, which posted to the Yale University Emergency Management website, told anyone on campus to remain where they were until more information was provided. In total, 35,000 members of Yale community were alerted about the incident.
"We have a very extensive alert system that goes out to every student," said Yale University spokesman Tom Conroy.

Could this be a case of mass hysteria, or maybe just over-reactions?
An alert is issued, then suddenly people see gunman out and about.
However, police believe that "suspect" seen by a witness could in fact be a member of law enforcement.
"They may not recognize that person is law enforcement personnel," New Haven Officer David Hartman said.
Investigators said the caller, who is not believed to be a Yale student, was the one making the threat, said New Haven police Chief Dean Esserman.
What's interesting was how the news blurbs and tweets going out about a man on a rooftop, a balding man with a long gun, etc., assumed all of the chatter to be verified.
It appears that there may never have been a gunman at all.
A good thing.

Guy on a roof smoking a cigarette was reported as a gunman on a roof.
And now it will take HOURS to clear this thing.
Dorm rooms don't have peep holes and people inside don't believe police at the door saying they're the police aren't really just saying that.

(3,194 posts)Less likely, as it's Yale, but imagine being under 21 with some empty beer bottles lying around, and perhaps a bong/pipe, and all of a sudden the police are banging on your door.

Oh wait, they lead with "ongoing" and switched-broadcast to "wrapping up"..
Useless fuckers.

And, just in case there IS a gunman (or gunwoman) somewhere, I guess they can't really give an "all clear".
So expect MSM to continue reporting gunman on campus.
Or gunwoman.
