No Welfare in Arizona as State First to Halt in Shut-Down

Source: Bloomberg

By Amanda J. Crawford - Oct 7, 2013

Thousands of families in Arizona have lost welfare assistance as the state became the first to halt payments during the partial U.S. government shutdown.

Arizona’s Economic Security Department stopped providing cash under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program on Oct. 3, Tasya Peterson, a spokeswoman, said by e-mail. An estimated 5,200 families are affected, according to Democrats in the state House of Representatives, who say they’ll ask Republican Governor Jan Brewer to call a special session to authorize the payments from state reserves.

“We are putting these families in a terrible situation,” said Representative Debbie McCune Davis, a Phoenix Democrat. “I don’t understand the lack of action.”

Arizona was one of 11 states last year that used only federal money for such a program, said LaDonna Pavetti of the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities, based in Washington. Others including New Mexico, South Carolina and Rhode Island had funds remaining in the program to carry benefits forward a few weeks, she said.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Many state agencies that administer the programs rely on federal funding which has dried up due to the shutdown over the budget impasse.

for the State to assume temporary custody of minor children ejected from their rent houses; TANF benefits-Temporary Assistance for Needy Families . The new Food Stamp Bill removed the State's authority to provide food stamps in an emergency situation. Republicans wanted an application and screening first. What will all of this cost the State taxpayers? Who will feed all of these children and people and where will the food be prepared at if they are evicted?

I hope that President Obama will Veto the Farm Bill or Food Stamp/SNAP Program.

let alone ready for the President to sign or veto. And the 1-year extension of the previous Farm appropriations from last year (that was expiring), has itself expired.... Plus the stopgap cherry-picked SNAP appropriation that the House passed last week, is DOA in the Senate. So there's nothing for the President to do because nothing has exited Congress to reach his desk.

Despite AZ's reputation as a haven for dumbasses we do have a lot of Dems here. Tucson and southern AZ are largely blue as is most of Flagstaff and northern AZ. It's just the idiots in Maricopa County who are fucking it all up.

In Mesa - the Mormon stronghold. I don't know if you've been to Mesa lately, but it's starting to look like a war zone here with all the abandoned buildings, strip malls, grocery stores, restaurants ... etc. There are more closed businesses than there are open ones. The surrounding cities like Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert don't seem to be as bad off as we are. Most people I run into around here complain about the Mormon pols, but despite being unpopular, somehow they maintain control of Mesa.

I used to visit a particular church on the highway in AZ because if I worked the graveyard shift on Saturday, that was the only one I could reach in plenty of time for services. But it wasn't my denomination and I wasn't a member - just a well-know regular visitor.

Well, one day when I was driving by, nature (not the holy spirit) called, so I stopped off there because I saw a lot of cars in the parking lot and knew the place was open. But when I entered the lobby and started towards the ladies room, some fool who knew me stood in my way and said I couldn't use their facilities. When I tried to walk around her, she blocked me. I was considering my options when inspiration struck: I stood under their palatial chandelier, pulled my long skirt above my ankles, squatted just a bit on their Persian rug, and told her it was either right there or in the restroom. She moved.

Here's the full quote:

"t's not going to be the end of the world honestly even if you're on nutritional assistance from the federal government. The state of Arkansas can help out, localities can help out, churches can help out, I believe that no one is going to starve in Arkansas because of the shutdown."
