A Federal Budget Crisis Months in the Planning
Source: NY Times
WASHINGTON Shortly after President Obama started his second term, a loose-knit coalition of conservative activists led by former Attorney General Edwin Meese III gathered in the capital to plot strategy. Their push to repeal Mr. Obamas health care law was going nowhere, and they desperately needed a new plan.
Out of that session, held one morning in a location the members insist on keeping secret, came a little-noticed blueprint to defunding Obamacare, signed by Mr. Meese and leaders of more than three dozen conservative groups.
It articulated a take-no-prisoners legislative strategy that had long percolated in conservative circles: that Republicans could derail the health care overhaul if conservative lawmakers were willing to push fellow Republicans including their cautious leaders into cutting off financing for the entire federal government.

The billionaire Koch brothers, Charles and David, have been deeply involved with financing the overall effort. A group linked to the Kochs, Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, disbursed more than $200 million last year to nonprofit organizations involved in the fight. Included was $5 million to Generation Opportunity, which created a buzz last month with an Internet advertisement showing a menacing Uncle Sam figure popping up between a womans legs during a gynecological exam.

There is a plethora of evidence out there that the hard right actively engineered the Government shutdown, yet the corporate media continues to push this false equivalency that both sides are at fault and fails to challenge Republicans claims that the President and Democrats are to blame. Of course, the Koch brothers are actively financing this effort and threatening to primary Republicans who do not support this hostage taking strategy.
I thought there were law's against this type of stuff.

(17,390 posts)...that is where they are coming from. Also, think Sheldon Adelson pushing a war with Iran. I am pretty sure they got theirs when it comes to health insurance.

(37,161 posts)This isn't just "young turk" Tea Party guys, it's long-time, "Tip & Ronnie" days, Movement Conservatives who have helped orchestrate this, funded by the same group of businesses and billionaires (not just the Kochs) that have funded their movement and its infrastructure for decades.
They have been bad actors the entire time.

(725 posts)Meese was with Reagan through the October Surprise, Iran Contra, the BCCI laundering CIA drug money, the Inslaw case.... a really nice clean cut guy......(where's that sarcasm thingy when I need it?). I really thought he was dead by now, but nope. Those bas'tids live a really long time, don't they!
They're from the same group Hillary called the "vast right wing conspiracy". They're the evil spawn of the originators of the bankers' plot. The Bushes are direct descendants as well as the Kochs' father. (He was one of the original John Birchers.)
They want power and control and they will do anything for it.

(17,390 posts)The challenge is TV where Republicans have been trained to ignore questions and recite talking points blaming democrats for the shy down.
