“A speaker with some spine wouldn’t hurt.”

The symbolism was perfect, a Congress that you sometimes think should be locked up being locked down, because of a threat from the outside this time.

For a few hours, the story was about a troubled woman leading cops on a car chase near the White House, before she was shot to death getting out of that car. So this was true crime, then, in Washington, D.C., not the kind of inside job being committed in the House of Representatives by a brand-new wing of the Republican Party, made up of crackpots, conservatives and cowards.

and then there is this nugget...

"And of course there is Rep. Steve King of Iowa, one of the dumbest people ever elected to national office in this country, another one leading the charge against Obamacare. Here was King’s idea once for keeping illegal immigrants out of America:

“We could also electrify this wire (on the border) with the kind of current that would not kill somebody, but it would simply be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it,” King said. “We do that with livestock all the time.”"

This comment isn't directly about the article, but I believe still applies to some extent.

I once knew a young man (about 23 yrs old) who thought that only people with college degrees should be allowed to vote. Don't ask me what his reasoning was. I was a tad miffed at the assertion. Little did he know that I had worked for many, many years at the same company (24 now to be exact and old enough to be his mother at the time) to achieve success in a management position.......with no college degree.

I was his boss.

I sure hope it was a lesson to him (and other like-minded idiots) to learn that college educations don't preclude nor ensure intelligence.

I see more ignorant people with college degrees than not. Intelligence doesn't necessarily come from a book or from multitudes of classes, though those things should help enhance one's knowledge and skills. Intelligence is about seeing the world around you, living it, learning from it and knowing, heaven forbid, the difference between ignorance and intelligence.

"Smart" doesn't inherently come with a piece of embossed paper...but when looking at our "legislators," stupid often seems to be the case.

Note to college graduates and those with post-graduate educations....this is not, in any way, saying that your education was not meaningful. Please don't take any offense.

Not once have I thought of him except with pride, respect, and admiration.

Had a 10th grade education but would baffle everyone when given (verbally) a moderately complex math problem to solve and would do it in minutes...often in seconds. Once, one person pulled out a calculator to verify her answers. I was pretty young then, but that alone left a long-lasting impression.

Got her GED at the age of 48 and never had to take any refresher classes to do it. Just went and took the test, and passed the first time. And not just barely....by a high percentage. My father had died and she couldn't get a decent paying job without a high school diploma.

and yet was one of the smartest guys I've ever met. He could puzzle anything out if he stared at it long enough.

No kidding, I've met some major league idiots sitting behind very classy desks in really impressive offices and act like the business is less important that the trappings. You walk in and it looks like the kind of office one would expect for a big time corporate law firm including the suit worn by the guy and golf clubs in the closet. Trouble is, it's a furniture factory.
