Wendy Davis launches bid for Texas governor

Wendy Davis, the Democratic state senator whose abortion filibuster catapulted her to national fame, announced Thursday that she will run for Texas governor, a race that looks to be a banner 2014 contest.
We love Texas not only for how good it is, but for how great we know it can be, Davis said in a news release. With the right kind of leadership, the great state of Texas will keep its sacred promise that where you start has nothing to do with how far you can go.
Davis will face off with Republican candidate Greg Abbott, the conservative states well-funded attorney general. She will make the announcement, which was all but official, at a rally in Haltom City, Texas, in the building where she received her high school diploma.
Davis, from Fort Worth, stole the spotlight this summer when she mounted a lengthy abortion filibuster, temporarily derailing a restrictive measure. But in Texas, she talks much more about another filibuster: one she staged protesting education cuts, in 2011. Her campaign is expected to focus on issues such as education and health care.
Democrats view her as their best shot to start turning Texas blue, following nearly two decades of Republican leadership in the governors mansion, which will be vacated by Gov. Rick Perry next year. Her abortion filibuster drew plaudits from state and national Democrats, including President Barack Obama. And she brings to the race interest from around the country, along with donors and a wellspring of enthusiasm, especially from groups focused on womens health issues.

(37,748 posts)For what it's worth, the local CBS affiliate news (DFW area) did a quick poll that has Davis on top with 58%, Abbot trailing a distant double-digit second, and the rest getting single digit results.
Abbot has already begun throwing mud in her direction by referring to her "California-style politics", but we all know that Davis is Texas born, Texas educated, and one of the best Texans we've seen in politics in since Anne Richards.
It's not a pipe dream... TX is already on the demographic cusp of turning our back on the good ole' boy system, and realizing a voice for all its residents, and she'll appeal to the moderate GOP voter who are disillusioned by everything from DeLay sending Homeland Security after Democrats avoiding a quorum, to the state's policy of making it as difficult as possible for women to receiving health-care.
Davis is a strong and vocal supporter of health care choices being made by the person rather than by Austin, re-funding the $5 billion the GOP removed from the education system, and stronger support for returning vets.
OUt of state support is certainly important, but c'mon fellow Lone Star staters... let's get this thing going!!!!!!

(94,950 posts)I'm not looking for someone who can make me feel good by saying things I want to hear; I'm looking for someone who can actually win and implement something. From what I know, this is still a Solid Republican Governorship, and the TX Democratic Party is do weak to deliver the vote's she'll need. Personally, I'd like to see her wait 4-5 years before running for Statewide office.

(32,139 posts)and I know it's going to be tough to get serious money in. BUT, she's got more charisma than Bill White (even though I personally like him) and she is running against someone who can't say much of anything without putting his foot in his mouth. She's already 50 years old - how old do you want her to get before she runs? I know Julian Castro is our biggest star, but he's not going to do this. He's got his sights on 2016. Considering what we have to work with she is a great candidate.

(373 posts)Greg Abbott is more popular than Rick Perry. She also has to overcome the moniker "Babykiller Barbie" that is floating around.
