Dwayne Jones, 'Cross-Dressing' Jamaican Teen, Allegedly 'Chopped And Stabbed' To Death By Mob
Source: Huffington Post
A "cross-dressing" teen was allegedly "chopped and stabbed" to death by a mob in Jamaica earlier this week, according to local media reports.
Dwayne Jones, a gender-nonconforming 17-year-old, was attending a river party in St. James on the night of July 21 when a mob allegedly set upon him, according to radio station Irie FM. He was dressed as a woman and was dancing with a male when another female attendee told a group of partiers that Jones was actually a man, the report notes. One of the men went up to Jones and groped him, discovering he was a male.
Jones was chased and later "chopped and stabbed" to death, Irie FM reported.
Explosions were also heard, and police were called. Authorities eventually found Jones' dead body on a nearby road "with multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound," according to the Jamaica Gleaner....

I've heard that homophobia to the extreme is rampant in Jamaica and I fear for all of our GLBT family there.

(8,830 posts)and has told me that the Afro-Caribbean community in that city have the most hardened attitude toward any deviation from what they consider the norm of any group he has seen.
It's hard to get through the refusal to even consider changing their attitudes.
Very sad story. I hope the family finds some peace - it would be great if they could find some justice for their child.

(51,564 posts)He had skin cancer on his toe, and they wanted to remove his toe but he refused, apparently because the Ratafarian religion precludes the removal of any body parts. Of course, it spread and he died a painful death at way too young an age.
But I think the homophobia there is spread by Christianity. I do not think Rastafarianism is the dominant religion in Jamaica. Or at least that is not how it was last time I was there about 10 years ago.

(26,623 posts)There are Christian churches everywhere. Homosexual acts are illegal. The homophobia and hatred is bible based.
Even as the church is losing it's grip on Americans, it is gaining strength in 3rd world and developing nations and fear, hatred and persecution of gays is rampant. In Uganda, they considered a law making homosexuality punishable by death and imprisoning anyone who doesn't turn in a known homosexual. Leaders in American fundamentalist Christian churches have been as active in developing nations as they've been buying and influencing Republican politicians here in America. They have an unending stream of money to work with.
It's a few years old, but "The Family" by Jeff Sharlet lays this out pretty well.
