Lawyer: Gun that killed Trayvon will be returned to Zimmerman

Source: Raw Story

Speaking to ABC News on Sunday, an attorney for George Zimmerman said that his client is now entitled to have his property returned thanks to his not guilty verdict, including the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin.

“Yes, he does,” attorney Mark O’Mara said, responding to a question on whether Zimmerman has the right to reclaim his Kel Tec 9 pistol. “The concealed weapons permit is another matter because that’s a decision by another state agency and they will make that determination.”

He added that the former neighborhood watchman would re-arm himself following the trial, given how many people feel he is guilty of murder. “[There's] even more reason now, isn’t there?” he reportedly said. “There are a lot of people out there who actually hate him, though they shouldn’t.”

In the wake of the verdict, leading activists, including NAACP President Benjamin Jealous, met with senior Justice Department officials to lobby for federal intervention, perhaps through a civil rights trial that looks at whether Martin were targeted because of his race. It is also possible that Martin’s family could file charges against Zimmerman in civil court.

Zimmerman took matters into his own hands when he decided to ignore the 911 operator's warning to not pursue Trayvon Martin. If Zimmerman had kept his distance--as he should have--Trayvon would still be alive today.

Neither Martin nor Zimmerman had a stellar past, but at the time, Trayvon wasn't breaking any laws, nor was he doing anything suspicious to anyone other than Zimmerman.

Zimmerman escalated the situation by not maintaining his distance. He should have let the police confront Trayvon, and they no doubt would have determined he wasn't doing anything suspicious and sent him on his way.

Now Zimmerman will know first hand what it's like to be someone like Trayvon--to have people be suspicious of you without cause, to have people avoid you because they don't feel safe around you.

Congratulations, Zimmerman...once the hunter, now the hunted.

It should read that the gun COULD be returned. He has to ask for it, and there is no indication in the article or elsewhere that he has. The article simply states that he has the right to have it returned.
