American Muslims condemn Boston Marathon bombings

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - American Muslim organizations are condemning the Boston Marathon bombings and urging Americans of all faiths to join them in praying for the victims and their families.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations also is asking American Muslims to offer authorities any leads they may have to help capture the perpetrators of Monday's blasts.

CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper says it's unfortunate that Muslims are often instantly considered suspects in such attacks.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council and the Muslim Peace Coalition USA also condemned the Boston bombings and extended condolences to victims and their families.

17. Do a bit more research.

Lately, the biggest perpetrators of violence in the US have been right-wing extremists. Believe it or not, they have outnumbered Muslim terrorists by much higher margins than you would believe and their violence is increasing. Hate crimes have been skyrocketing in number; several worshipers were gunned down at a Sikh temple, several were shot by a Glenn Beck zombie at a Unitarian Church, two different taxi drivers have been shot for being Muslims (one was East Indian), an Iranian woman was killed by a person(s) for her nationality, Skinhead and Hammerskin violence is escalating as we have seen by the recent rash of law enforcement killings, and and none of this even covers the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building. The Southern Poverty Law Center keeps statistics and records of many hate crimes perpetrated by right-wing extremists against Muslims, most of them being property crimes, but they have been many that have included beatings and killings. Right-wing violence has reached it's ascendancy. Whether this crime was committed by Muslims or not, right-wing extremists are still gunning for our law enforcement officers and minorities.

21. I think you're biased

I'll wait till all the evidence comes in. If it is truly a Muslim, you can have the smug satisfaction of knowing you called it correctly.

22. As a veteran of three wars, I don't want to get into who has the greater capacity for evil.

As an Army nurse, I took care of our guys that were torn to pieces from roadside bombs, but I also saw civilians who got pulverized by us in air operations. We started a war with a country that had never hurt us, which resulted in hundreds of thousands dead, and even now we're killing innocent civilians, including children, with our drones. We know a thing or two about mass murders at the touch of a button.

the death of one is equally evil as the deaths of many, because the potential of one life is priceless.

37. k, well that does make sense, but I was thinking more from an individual ethical position, how

to guide one's own behavior, not legal, i.e. collective ethics, in which more does make sense, as it represents value to the group, a fungible value, though, as it is acceptable to respect what is done legally in wars.

At least wait for the investigation to be over?

What if it turns out to be some NRA guy disgruntled about the recent refusal of the supreme court to hear an appeal of the CC permit?

41. In Europe far-right extremists have killed about as many as have Islamic terrorists since 1990.

Europe’s right-wing extremism problem was hauled out of the shadows by Anders Behring Breivik’s shocking attack in July 2011 which killed 77 people. While many government agencies still hide behind the “lone wolves” theory, a 2012 Europol report concludes that the “threat of violent right-wing extremism has reached new levels in Europe and should not be underestimated”. Another report by the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism in the Hague adds that least 249 have been killed in far-right violence in Europe since 1990, compared with 263 victims of jihadist extremism.

24. If we didn't have so many violent attacks where American RW

fanatics are the perpetrators, perhaps people wouldn't instantly consider THAT possibility.

I, for one, am going to assume it was RW teabagger-type domestic terrorists until proven otherwise. If it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck........

18. Tim McVeigh? Was he a Muslim?

How about Bobby Joe Rogers? Eric Rudolph?

And John Brockhoeft? Are they Muslim, too?

It is premature, bordering on stereotyping and bigotry--something that's not "on" here at DU, to accuse anyone at this point in time, unless--and I strongly doubt this--you are a member of the BPD or FBI and have "inside" information unavailable to the rest of us plebians.

I think you need to modify your behavior, to say nothing of that shitty post, lest you get a reputation here.

30. Or of course, Timothy McVeigh and other angry white men with time on their hands.

Look at all the iconic American symbols today:

Patriot's Day - the kickoff of the Revolution
Boston - the center of rebellion amongst the colonies
April 15 - income tax deadline
Kennedy library - symbol of violent change in government

It's a domestic and gonna be one of the crazies that think we don't have to pay income tax because there's no "real" money to pay it with.

8. Wait, Muslims committed this act?

I didn't know this. I've been listening and reading coverage and I haven't heard anything about any person or group of persons being accused of planting the bombs. I know Muslim terrorists love bragging and taking credit for any acts of terror that they commit. Has anyone called to claim responsibility for the bombings?

13. While Their Motive and Message are Pure

Unfortunately, this type of statement will only serve as an admission to some that Muslims are behind the attack. It's interesting because if they hadn't said anything, people would be up in arms about how Muslims are staying quiet about the whole thing.

The fact is, we still don't know who did it. Honestly, it doesn't matter to me whether they were Muslim, White Supremacists, Left-Wingers, Right-Wingers, etc. I hope they are captured along with anyone who helped or assisted in any way and that they are brought to justice.

Is this the same "some" that Fox News is always citing?

"Some say that...."

Add on edit: I should be clear that I agree with you. However, the Fox News "some" aren't going to be open to reason in any case.

29. I agree

My first suspicion -- and that's all it is, a suspicion -- was that
it was done by a Tim McVeigh-type of angry U.S. radical who identifies
with the Tea Party:

It happened on Income Tax Deadline Day.

It happened in Boston.

It happened on a state holiday called "Patriots' Day" which
commemorates the start of the Revolutionary War.

It happened 4 days before the anniversary of OK City bombing.

It may turn out that an Al Qaida-type terrorist group is responsible.
In the end, whoever is responsible is an evil asshole first and foremost.

28. Md. Muslim group condemns 'cowardly terrorist act'

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/breaking/bal-md-muslim-council-condemns-boston-bombings-20130415,0,757469.story

Dr. Syed Wasimul Haque, the president of the United Maryland Muslim Council, condemned the "cowardly terrorist act" at the Boston Marathon Monday that has killed three and wounded more than 100.

"Our prayers go out for the fallen victims and to the city of Boston," Haque, a Frederick physician, said in a statement.

He and others in Maryland's Muslim community have condemned past acts of violence and terror against the United States.

"The Muslims have always stood shoulder to shoulder during perilous times that our nation has faced and will do so in the future as well against all terrorist attacks," Haque said. "These terrorist attacks do nothing but strengthen our resolve to fight back such cowardly act and unite us more as a nation."

All public evidence leads me to believe this was a right winger not a muslim. Yet it seems the investigation is focused on arabs.

Obviously I don't have much information, but I saw an article where 2 gop congressmen are blaming Islam already. And of course Alex Jones thinks obama did this to degrade civil liberties.
