President Obama orders commission to address voting issues

Source: Associated Press

President Barack Obama has signed an executive order establishing a presidential commission to address voting issues.

Obama announced his plans to create the commission last month in his State of the Union address. The top lawyer for Obama's re-election campaign, Bob Bauer, will co-chair the commission with the top lawyer for Republican Mitt Romney's campaign, Ben Ginsburg.

The goal is to address issues including long lines at the polls, voter registration and voter access.

The order gives the commission six months after its first public meeting to submit a report to Obama about ways to improve the voting experience.

I guess he couldn't find a Repuke who isn't a despicable pig. This is a lot like picking Alan Simpson to head a budget commission.

12. I can see some good in it.

Keeps the Republican/conservatives from griping that Obama doesn't reach out and that they are totally left out, and if he pushes too hard toward the right's agenda, Bauer is the one that can straighten him out.

Just sayin...................

some people are gullible and will believe them, and turn against us. At least this way, they have to look at reality.

17. Can Bob Bauer

Stand up to Ben Ginsberg? Ginsberg, after all, was key to Bush v Gore and we know how that turned out. Don't be surprised if Voter ID is one of the provisions recommended when fraud is prevented not by purges of currently register voters based on a profile but steps at registeration time that assures elgibility to vote. But, I guess we wait and see.

10. as part of my civic duty I hereby save them 6 months and lots of $$ by giving them ideas...

election day registration
early voting 7 days a week for a month in advance
sufficient ballots/polling booths in all precincts
ballots/machines available in equal proportion at all precincts
eliminate bullying/intimidation inside/outside polling places

I am sure DUers will have many more.

unless this commission is just another hack PR stunt....

18. If programmable electronic voting is used the machine must provide two copies of the vote to the

voters. One copy the voter will keep for his/her records the other copy will be deposited into a locked container, these to be used as an audit trail (check on the machine tallies).

20. If I were to change it I would only ask for two things.

Voting day a national holiday.
And hand counting of ballots on receipt at the polling place ...(you drop your paper ballot down a slot that goes to a room with some old people at a table that count it and confirm it on the spot and tabulate it, and when the polls close post the results at the polling place)

It would accomplish two important things....makes voting a holiday and insures an accurate and honest vote....no computer or software glitches...and a hell of a lot cheaper than paying thousands for a computer to do what a senior citizen would love to do to make a few bucks extra....and no need to store the computers till next time.

29. I'm not convinced the national holiday would really increase the vote

We have that here in Korea and I can tell you most of the young people blow off voting to do something else. Maybe it would be more effective in the US.

Vote by mail as someone else suggested down thread would be better. As an Oregonian I really have liked that.

We have it here in Oregon. It's great. Get your ballot. Take some time to think about it. Mail it in.

30. I agree

I wish some of the other states would head the same direction. The only two states that are exclusively vote by mail are Washington and Oregon.

It sure would eliminate some of those lines in the bigger states where people had to stand in line for hours (Ohio, Florida, etc).

With all the methods Republican/conservatives are creating to restrict voting, something needs to be done to curtail it.

13. Without the power to actually implement their suggestions, this commission

is basically the UN--sure, they can suggest we sort out our shit, but they can't make us.

Mark my words--nothing will come of it, and Republican-dominated states will continue fucking minority voters over.

16. One can only hope this Commission will look at the whole gambit of ways

elections are stolen, and not narrowly focus on one or two of the ways there are to cheat.

Here are some examples of ways elections are rigged:
1) Electronic voting machines and/or tabulators being hacked
2) Gerrymandering
3) Voter purges designed to target a particular demographic, under the guise of "cleaning up the voting rolls".
4) Onerous voter ID requirements
5) Distribution of patently false and deliberately misleading information to a targeted demographic as to the
date they are supposed to vote, the location of their ballot box, etc.
6) The super-rich "buying" elections, via Citizens United.

and I'm sure there are more as this is just off the top of my head. Not unsurprisingly, these are the ways the GOP have become accustomed to buggering elections in the US of A.

even if we are able to insure access to the polls, it means little unless we have a completely verifiable paper trail...

26. Very valid points, gerrymandering is a big problem, districts made to give offices to

Republicans. Making rules to have id's when many older people do not drive anymore and make several trips to get the proper ID. Purging voter rolls, picking on Democrat areas to have many names removed, what do you want to bet if the name was Republican they did not purge it. Voter fraud like the Republican lady on Colorado attempting to vote twice. After the SC gave the election to Bush in 2000 I don't think I would cry voter fraud.

BTW, I am one of the old people who works at the polls on voting day, I can not speak for all places but I work with very knowledgeable judges who do everything possible to see that everyone to vote.

Except this time, it's going to be in the form of 'voter review' & I'm sure they'll agree that same day registration & early voting IS a problem and requiring Voter ID IS actually ok ....

Where the hell do I live?? This is not the America I grew up with.
