Rand Paul filibustering Brennan nomination to lead CIA

Source: USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — John Brennan's nomination to lead the CIA was delayed Wednesday by a one-senator filibuster by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., about concerns about the legality of drone strikes against U.S. citizens overseas.

"I'm going to speak as long as I can to draw attention to something I find very disturbing," said Paul, who started speaking at 11:45 a.m.

It's not a partisan issue, Paul said, noting that he voted to support the nominations of John Kerry and Chuck Hagel, the secretaries of State and Defense.

Paul and other senators had delayed a full Senate vote on Brennan's nomination until they received more information about the drone program. The White House provided Justice Department documents on the drone program to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday.

If you feel strongly enough to oppose something you stand up there and let the world know why you oppose it. I'm glad to see he's not hiding behind a bullshit secret hold or something like that.

I am no fan of Little Rand, but unless I missed sarcasm, I find this to be not credible.

If sarcasm, it is very poor, as why would you smear someone who is doing (in this case) the RIGHT THING?

The president has the authority under the Constitution to suspend habeas corpus in case of an insurrection. But we don't have an insurrection, and the President has never presented the full evidence or made his case that he has used drones appropriately.

Obviously, the president can rebuff an attack on the US, but he can't just order drone attacks. Not unless he suspends the Constitution, and in that case, he would be violating his oath of office.

This is not about President Obama. It is about all presidents.

credit for having the courage of his convictions and conducting a real filibuster. I have no problem with real filibusters like this one. I remember when Bernie Sanders pulled off a similar filibuster in 2010 to protest budget cuts.

What I object to is the bullshit tactics employed all the time by the GOP leadership when they just make a motion and start a non talking filibuster. If they feel that strongly about something then do a real filibuster like Paul and Sanders did. Harry Reid should have had enough balls to stop non talking filibusters. But of course he didn't.

and droning on. I actually agree with his opposition to foreign military adventures and the use of drones on US citizens who don't pose an imminent threat. But is he aware that Obama clarified his position today that he wouldn't use drones in that way? Also, what the heck does this have to do with the confirmation of the CIA chief?

We've come down to Rand Paul defending civil rights.

If this were Schumer the GOP would be screaming.

Obama is fully to the modern nation state just like
Bush, just like the UK. A state must protect itself.

Politics makes strange bedfellows.
