Rep. Gohmert: Americans Need Guns To Protect The Nation From Sharia Law
Source: Think Progress
Tea Party Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told a conservative radio show on Thursday that the GOP must oppose gun regulations to protect the country from the threat of Sharia Law.
Appearing on The Voice of Freedom, Gohmert said he hoped and prayed that Congress rejects gun safety legislation, arguing that Americans may need to use the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment to avoid succumbing to Muslims:
(The Second Amendment) is for our protection and the founders quotes make that very very clear and including against a government that would run amuck. Weve got some people who think Sharia Law should be the law of the land, forget the Constitution. But the guns are there to make sure all of the rest of the Amendments are followed.

(22,000 posts)My guess is he hasn't read a thing about Sharia Law. I read quite a bit for my international law class last term and found it fascinating since it is quite different from other types of law in the world. All people like Gohmert are doing is riling the right wing base and spreading lies.

(464 posts)Militias were tightly controlled organizations legally defined and regulated by the individual colonies before the Revolution and, after independence, by the individual states.
The founders had a word for a bunch of farmers marching with guns without government sanction: a mob.

(29,414 posts)I haven't, though I have read that it has strong similarities to Biblical law. It would be interesting to create a compare and contrast list of the laws for each belief, complete with the reference quotes. That way, Gomert could look them up in his bible.
He wouldn't believe any of it, but it would still be worth a try. And, we'd then have that list for use elsewhere

(29,414 posts)I get the impression they're making it up as they go along, using the most extreme stuff to whip up their ignorant base. Maybe what can happen is that they'll find some way of challenging Sharia law in court, only to have the reality of it backfire and educate them in the process

Well. Let's just say there is a LOT of competition. Gomer is going to have to work pretty hard to remain Bottom Dog.

(26,655 posts)He left the day he graduated high school. Most of his non religious, non racist, progressive friends also left, just like you. It's the flight or fight scenario. If your can't flow, and you can't fight, flee. But, at times, I wonder; if more progressives like you, my husband, and so many others, had stayed, maybe the Gohmerts and Cruzes would have been marginalized by now. That said, I don't blame you and thank my husband for leaving.

Her husband is Hispanic, and, per her, she was given a cold shoulder during our 25th reunion in '07....my wife is black, and I have the same reservations she has about attending this years....it's sad....I left due to enlisting in the navy and most of my immediate family lived here in Daytona Beach when I got out in '97. It wasn't so crazy there even then....I don't know what happened...at this point I don't care to know. I lost a lot of old friends during the elections...some during the gun control and seccesion debates recently, and I'm a gun owner!(all over 30 rd clips and background checks). I love east Texas, but I can't go back to that mess...not now....

(21,046 posts)The main occupation of
the folks around here seems to be hating other people who are not just like them.IOW, white Conservative Christian Southerners.
One woman, in 10 minutes, informed me she hated the following, without me saying a word: French people (and her son hates them too), Yankees who should have stayed up north instead of meddling with the south. That's one word amnyankees.
And she was also trying to get in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Figure that out. I thought they were the Over The Hill Mickey Mouse Club. Told me some of her relatives had "good judgment, they settled in South Carolina."
She probably wishes she had her own slaves. She folds her arms, rolls her eyes, and gives this self-satisfied smirk when she makes these statements.
These people haven't gotten over the Civil War, for God's sakes.
Then she talks about how stupid kids are and how they need an education and her son (the one who hates French people) is getting a Ph.D. AND SHE NEVER SHUTS UP!!!
She works at the college I'm going to for non-credit courses at night. i avoid her now.
A man I bought some stainless steel scrap from told me god answers prayer b/c some little boy got cured of melanoma. He also told me that "Mexican is a vulgar language, but Spanish is classy."

(3,502 posts)Who are these folks who think that Sharia law should be the law of the land? I'm just curious because I've never met any. I've met a lot of muslims and none of them have expressed any interest in having it here. Some rightwing Christians come kinid of close, but that's it.

(11,366 posts)Their "straw man" arguments depend on putting words in the mouths of unnamed opponents that nobody ever said, then railing fiercely and at length over the made-up quote. Limbaugh does this on his horrible radio show EVERY DAY.

(2,730 posts)now. Use the Second Amendment to avoid succumbing to Muslims. This is another Republican representative who people put into office. He is from Texas. He is no different than the guy from McCain's townhall or Senator Grassly. Need I say more about the Republican party. They are not afraid to show their colors either. Americans need to denounce the hatred coming out of this rightwing Party. It goes all the way to this fight over the Sequestrian cuts too. Our problem is the Republican Party. The sooner Americans reject this party the better. That is what I think needs to be done in the midterm elections. You see all of these Republican Governors getting close to election time now trying to make good with the public as if nothing ever happened. The persons need to be in the unemployment lines need to be these people. The crazies in those red districts are taking the sane people with them right over a cliff. I hope more and more people will come to their senses and see how much the Republican Party is damaging this country.

For every week you CAN'T, you get put in front of a FoxNews Camera and forced to apologize for being a demonstrable idiot. And I DO mean FORCED. Teddy Roosevelt's Big Stick is a real thing now, (we found it in an old attic) and we hired KO, Rachel and Lawerence O'Donnell to sit on the decision-making board regarding possible breaches of this new Party edict.
Good luck to you all.

That is not exactly a "threat" that it takes a gun to protect yourself from. A letter to the editor or your elected representative if it ever comes up would more than do the trick.
