(Power outage delays Super Bowl) AP: Lights out: Power outage stops game at Super Bowl

Source: AP-Excite

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Power went out at the Superdome early in the third quarter of the Super Bowl on Sunday with the Baltimore Ravens leading the San Francisco 49ers 28-6.

The majority of lights failed shortly after Jacoby Jones returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown. There was 13:22 left in the quarter.

The teams remained on the field, with players stretching and trying to stay warmed up, including the Ravens' Joe Flacco and Ed Reed. Cheerleaders kept going through their routines

This is new. I hope they get it figured out in a hurry. The lights are handled by IBEW workers btw.

News to follow.

39. Possibly

Equipment breaks, but it also gets used after its expected life time, or the system is improperly designed, etc. There was also significant electrical work done on the Superdome in the last 6 months, and according to local papers the Superbowl used less electricity than most football games due to the mild temperatures (less AC).

The Superdome is fed by 3 separate energy grids, each in theory capable of independently powering the entire dome. We'll see what the fallout is, but there was no excuse for this.

Or so they say.

25. What motive!? Where to begin...?

Do you realize how many millions if not BILLIONS of dollars depends on this game?

Someone hacked into the electrical system. Not necessarily anyone associated with the 49ers, but there are countless people who would gain with a turnaround of fortunes...including the TV people.

Hell, a 14 year old with a laptop could have done it as a prank.

26. I agree, I just postulated one

The network has the most to gain and I think this has happened before with the network raking it in on the increased ad revenue.

13. No, the NFL strikes

and the network. The NFL slows the momentum so they can maybe get their story book game and the network gives the corporations that paid millions on commercial time their moneys worth.
