Gov. McDonnell Condemns Virginia Senate GOP Move As Bad Way To Do Business

Source: TPM

EVAN MCMORRIS-SANTORO JANUARY 22, 2013, 10:25 AM

After first distancing himself from the new legislative lines the Virginia Senate GOP forced through Monday, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) condemned his party’s political gamesmanship Tuesday. “I certainly don’t think that’s a good way to do business,” McDonnell told reporters in Richmond, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.

Republicans took advantage of the absence of a Democratic state senator (and civil rights leader) to push their surprise legislative redistricting through what is usually an evenly divided state Senate. State Sen. Henry Marsh’s (D) trip to the inauguration of President Obama briefly made the Senate makeup 20-19 in favor of the GOP, letting Republicans launch their surprise attack.

In a statement to TPM Monday night, McDonnell’s office distanced itself from the move. The governor has put forward an ambitious legislative agenda for his final year in office, and Democrats say the state Senate GOP action Monday puts McDonnell’s plans in jeopardy.

McDonnell appears to want none of the state Senate GOP move. “I would prefer nothing else get in the way of those significant reforms,” McDonnell said Tuesday, referring to his legislative agenda. McDonnell has so far not said if he would veto the redistricting plan, which still must pass the state House. It is not clear if McDonnell has taken or will take other steps to undo the Senate GOP’s surprise move.

4. The fact he made that statement leaves us hope. Let's pray he does the right thing and vetoes.

6. The only way McDonnell will veto this

is if the people of Virginia cause a uproar! Otherwise he just sign it! We all know the GOP can't win unless they rig the election so they can steal it.

7. What Juvenile Behavior by the GOP

This is the way we used to act and do things in our college senate. We had an excuse. We were silly students and the results didn't affect a whole state. We were learning how stupid and childish moves like the VA GOP just did really are. But since we were in school it was part of the learning process and I think that was okay. We paid the price for it in unpopularity in many cases.

It's not okay for middle-aged people who are allegedly responsible adults to act that way in a state legislature.

8. My guess is that directly or indirectly he finds a way to get it reversed

Not because he's such a noble guy, but because it is the politically smart move.

10. I take it, then, that VA does not observe MLK Day?

That it had business as usual work day? Al Sharpton, at the end of his program, said something about VA, wonder whether this was what he referred to.

12. We have Lee-Jackson-King Day. A day to honor Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and MLK

And, no, I am not making this up. Our state gub'mint adjourned Monday "in memory of General Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson."
