2. In reading other accounts, I find I can't finish

reading - I get to the part where there are allegations of, to be a little oblique, outright sadism, and seriously want to cry. I'm kind of speechless. How does one account for such acts?

6. Yes, I believe he's being tried as a youth.

"If the sixth accused is confirmed to be a minor, he could be sent to a children's home for a maximum of three years, according to IBN."

From Judi-Lynn's link here about yet another horrific event in India: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=356850

"On Thursday, five men detained after the attack were charged with gang rape and murder, offences that could carry the death penalty. A sixth male allegedly involved in the attack has at this stage been judged to be a juvenile and is scheduled to be dealt with by a juvenile court, despite demands from the young woman’s family that he too should face the hangman. The five men are due to be brought before a specially-established fast-track court today." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/indian-woman-jumps-off-moving-train-to-flee-rape-8439044.html

7. I read in another account (GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION WARNING)

that the girl's intestines were actually pulled out with bear hands, one of the rapists did. ... In that light, is three years enough for anything - rehabilitation, punishment, public safety? How can anything short of life imprisonment be justified?

8. OMG

I hadn't heard that. Animals!! No, three years isn't enough, I understand why the family is calling for them all to be hanged. The torture of knowing what she endured I'm sure will be with them every day for the rest of their lives.

5. Sadistic bastards - they should hang

Police found and arrested some of suspects within 24 hours. From highway CCTV recordings, a description of the bus, a white privately operated charter bus with a name written on it, and details of the windows, blinds, and seats could be seen. Going to the bus stand where the victims boarded it, other operators identified it as being contracted by a south Delhi private school. They then traced it and found its driver, Ram Singh. Police had sketches of the assailants with the help of the male victim, and used a cell phone stolen from the pair to find one of them.

Six men have been arrested in connection with the incident: Ram Singh, the bus driver, and his brother, Mukesh Singh, were both arrested in Rajasthan; Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor, was arrested in Delhi, as was Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller; Muhammad Afroz aka Raju, a minor and native of Uttar Pradesh was arrested by the police at Anand Vihar terminal in Delhi; Akshay Thakur, a man who had gone from Bihar to Delhi seeking work, was arrested in Aurangabad in Bihar.

I think that Police have not released the name of the minor, Muhammad Afroz, primarily not because he is a minor but because he is a muslim and they want to prevent a communal conflict.

I think they all should hang. Use a smaller noose for the so called minor.

9. which is kind of stupid because based on the names

they were hindu, sikh, and muslim .

but there are ignorant people who would ignore that and just focus on the one who is not like that so it might be a good idea to avoid the religious conflicts.

10. No sikhs in that group.

Not all "Singh"s are Sikh. Many are Yadavs, Jats and Rajpoots.

12. Probably to avoid embarassment

like many perps in the US do as well.

Also, the police may want to cover them for their own protection from prison justice. I heard one of them was pretty badly roughed up by inmates in the Tihar jail.
