New Year’s Stampede Kills 61, Mostly Children

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Kaleva (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: ABC News

A crush of people has killed at least 61 party-goers — most of them children — following New Year’s eve celebrations in the city of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. Officials say over 200 were injured in a stampede of people who had been watching fireworks at the African country’s sports stadium.

I've always avoided crowds.

There just is no way to control a stampede like this.

These frenzied high crowd events always come down to a promoter wanting profits, be it Wal-Mart on Black Friday, a concert, fireworks, sports. The top dog promoter needs to be held criminally responsible for such tragedies. Only then will they take the needed precautions.

Unfortunately there is assuredly that little barrier to criminal charges known as being politically connected and possession of a get out of jail free card. It serves as the basis for what's gone wrong with much of America.

Probably the same in Nigeria.

Now, I not only understand it, I share it...Those pushing to be at the head of some enormous line on Black Friday are nuts, in my estimation... Crowd behavior can turn on a dime to something very deadly.

These sports event crowd stampedes are so depressingly tragic.

But, I do know that I learned never to go to a popular event that did not assign seating. That is a recipe for disaster.
