Venezuela murder rate soars

Source: Telegraph

Venezuela, the most violent country in South America, recorded a new high of 21,692 murders this year along with a surge in kidnappings, prison riots and random shootings.

The number of victims was up by 12 per cent from last year when there were 19,336 deaths, the Venezuelan Violence Observatory said in its annual report.
---------------------------------------
The rate is well above neighbouring Columbia, and Mexico which has been engaged in a bloody drug war, and is closing in on Honduras, the country with the highest murder rate.

There are more murders in Venezuela than in the United States and the 27 countries of the European Union combined. In Caracas the murder rate is more than 200 per 100,000 inhabitants.

On other sites, a lot of right wing types are whining about the disrespect shown to George Bush too. But not in threads about Chavez. Why do you care so much about GHWB that you bring him up here, completely off topic? And since you replied to my post, it's pretty fucking obvious that my answer will be to that reply, Einstein.

Your need to try to make it seem like only a right wing bias says a lot about your sense of balance.Just to make it clear for you I think Chavez is a fucking clown and Bush is an evil bastard but I don't wish death, painful or peaceful, on either. Do you have the "decency" to do the same?

I just don't give a damn.

Comparing the two is ridiculous anyway. GHWB was a fucking traitor to his country and a terrorist to other countries. Chavez is so far above him in morals and character that it's stupid to even bring up GHWB in a thread about Chavez. Are you stupid? Or just in love with the Bushes?

Bacchus4.0 gave me a reality check though.

I was in the bubble.

Anyway, isn't it amusing, this story would not have been posted by Chavez lovers. The crime rate in Venezuela is the one thing they simply don't want to talk about.

Imagine, someone posts a story about murders in New Orleans or Chicago, and someone else posts "Still feeling butthurt because Rahm won," or "Still feeling butthurt because Bobby Jindal won." That's how childish this statement is.

That's messed up.

OP just posts the stuff that isn't posted about Latin America because some people prefer to keep their heads in the sand. Latin America is not going to improve if we keep ignoring the big issues that the poor and impoverished face there. The leaders in those countries must be held accountable and people must be informed of their bad policies so that discussion can foster. Instead people try to shut it down by attacking the poster and throwing out puerile statements.

The US has roughly 11X the population of Venezuela; we'd need to see over 200,000 murders per year in the US to match their rate. Right now there are approximately 16,000 murders in the US every year.

It's weird; show them the actual numbers and it usually doesn't change their mind, and as often as not reinforces their belief to the contrary.

I don't pretend to get it, but it's basically a near-universal thought process in the western world at least.

Christ, that's equivalent to the US losing over 200,000 people per year.

It would be like an entire large city being wiped off the map year after year after year.

With paramilitary groups, many tied to the gang culture. It doesn't help that the chavistas spend boatloads of money on their MIC.
